Tuning of chassis and brakes

The Kalina's chassis underwent major modifications at the design stage. So it is rarely subjected to deep tuning. Basically, drivers are limited to these measures:

  • Additional fasteners and support “sports” bearings of the SS20 brand are installed on the steering rack of the front suspension;
  • The standard front struts are replaced with more reliable ones. Most often, racks from Plaza are installed;
  • Springs with reduced pitch are installed on the suspension. This allows you to improve the car's handling;
  • Kalina's standard brake discs are replaced with sports ones, the diameter of which is larger. Usually drivers install wheels from LGR or Brembo. They are more than enough to ensure safe driving in an aggressive style;

First stage: wheels and rims

Often the happy owners of a Lada Kalina experience a strong temptation to install solid wheels of fifteen radius on their car. Don't give in to him! Yes, it looks good, but the disadvantages of such an initiative are an order of magnitude greater than the advantages: in combination with the unprecedented quality of Russian roads, you will get an even worse ride quality, in addition, do not forget that the Kalina arches are not designed for fifteen-inch wheels, and the wheels can simply touch them at every hole. Obvious damage to both rubber and metal.

If you are seriously concerned about tuning Kalina, you cannot do without beautiful and high-quality wheels. A little more about external changes

External tuning of VAZ cars includes engine protection and subframes. They are installed from the bottom of the machine. The subframe increases body rigidity and protects the engine from impacts from below. The car's handling improves and the steering wheel becomes more obedient. You can easily install such protection with your own hands; it works and does not require complex interventions in the design of the machine.

A developed imagination and skillful hands of a car owner can turn the body of his vehicle into an almost masterpiece. Some install a plastic hood. Appearance

Here are the main improvements to the appearance of the Kalina, which are carried out by owners of both sedans and hatchbacks:

  • installation of new disks. Initially, Kalina is equipped only with steel wheels. Their appearance can hardly be called presentable, although they have an undoubted advantage: if damaged, they are easy to repair. However, tuning enthusiasts almost always remove the steel wheels and replace them with cast ones. They are much more beautiful, but with strong impacts they simply crack, after which they can only be thrown away;

  • spoiler. This element is installed on both sedans and hatchbacks. The only difference is the location. On sedans, the spoiler is installed directly on the trunk lid. Unfortunately, there is practically nothing to improve in the Kalina's interior. Of course, you can replace the dashboard and steering wheel. You can protect the pedals with comfortable and practical pads and replace the front seats with sports buckets. Lovers of high-quality sound should look into the audio system - however, this topic has its own nuances and is worthy of separate discussion.

After Vladimir Putin made his trip in a Lada Kalina Sport, almost everyone learned about it. Subsequently, a special type of coloring was even created, which was called “premier”. However, Lada Kalina Sport became interesting not only for this, but also for the fact that the domestic AvtoVAZ released a completely “different” car, which is more balanced and charismatic than the standard model.

The first thing that catches your eye when you get to know the car is its design, that is, the changes that it has undergone in comparison with the standard VAZ-1119 hatchback. The front bumper is quite developed, and in combination with the grille, it gives the Kalina a completely different look that attracts everyone's attention.

The rear wing, which is located above the trunk door, the decorative nozzle and the rear bumper give the car a finished look.

Moreover, the rear bumper, in which the diffuser stands out, does not look like a clumsy product of home-grown tuners. Kalina Sport now seems brighter and “angrier” than its standard model. But, despite this, the car has retained its unified appearance, a rather rare phenomenon if we consider the modifications of Russian cars.

15-size wheels fit perfectly into this exterior: alloy wheels and low-profile tires. There are also disc brakes at the rear!

If you look closely, you will be able to notice that the car's ground clearance has been reduced to 14 centimeters. For the sake of handling, the suspension is tuned towards the greatest rigidity. The new bumper gives Kalina Sport more and more aggressiveness, although the solid appearance still remains preserved.

The car's interior has some sporty notes. The instrument dials are white, the pedals are “aluminum”, and, most importantly, the front seats have a sporty look. They also have built-in headrests and developed lateral support. They look quite attractive, and in practice they are quite comfortable: they are much stiffer, they fix the body well, and do not allow it to “fall out” when turning. There is just one drawback: the car feels like a minivan, but in such cars you really want a low seating position.

The second drawback is the sound of the engine, which is absolutely no different from the standard sound. However, what you can’t forgive is for the sake of power and dynamics! The front seats look great. But the standard fit is quite high, and there is no way to adjust the height.

Kalina Sport offers two engine options: a 1.4-liter, 89 hp, which is installed on the standard model, as well as a 1.6-liter, which has a lightweight piston group from Priora.

Despite the fact that the Russian hatchback is still far from being a “rocket”, you can get great pleasure while driving it quickly.

If you move at the pace of city traffic, the engine will pull well at medium speeds. This allows you not to worry about choosing a gear. If dynamics are required, it will be enough to turn the needle on the taximeter at 3000 rpm. After the tires handle the start, fairly rapid acceleration occurs, continuing even after the speedometer mark exceeds 100 km/h.

The modified chassis also leaves a good impression. True, now Kalina has begun to recalculate every joint of the roadway and shake the driver a little on bumps, but, if you look from the other side, the energy intensity has been well preserved, and the car’s behavior on the roads has become more consistent. There have also been changes in roll when cornering, which has decreased significantly. Responsiveness to steering movements has increased. The car stopped “floating” during active lane changes and confidently adheres to the given trajectory on a high-speed arc.

Reupholstering a car interior is one of the main ways that can significantly change the interior. However, it is not easy to do such interior tuning yourself. To make everything look truly beautiful, it requires a lot of experience and patience. The only exception may be the reupholstery of the interior with model material.

Head restraints for rear passengers are designed to reduce the likelihood of injury to the cervical spine in an accident. The safety of domestic cars has never been a top priority, so until 2010 the Lada Kalina was produced without rear head restraints, but you can install them yourself.

  • By reducing the diameter of the valve stem at its plate, you will increase the throughput of this section.
  • Replacing the standard exhaust system with a direct-flow one will improve the removal of exhaust gases from the combustion chambers and increase the power of the power plant.
  • Setting up the electronic engine control unit cannot be done by hand, so you need to contact specialists to make adjustments to accommodate the changes made in the mechanical part of the engine.
