Do-it-yourself complete oil change in the Lada Granta automatic transmission

Changing the oil in a Granta automatic transmission is a procedure that a car owner must do when his car has driven a certain number of kilometers. Despite the installed Jatco JF414E automatic transmission, which was specially manufactured for the Asian market and harsh climatic conditions, the machine needs topping up and a complete change of lubricant regularly.

Lada Granta automatic transmission: changing the oil in an automatic transmission

Let's start with the fact that the automatic transmission on the Grant conventionally belongs to the category of so-called “maintenance-free” gearboxes.
In other words, as the manufacturer himself claims, the oil in the automatic transmission of the Lada Granta is filled for the entire service life of the car. It turns out that you only need to change the oil in the Lada Granta automatic transmission if the gearbox is being repaired. Otherwise, there is no need to change the oil during operation. Let us immediately note that in practice, the absence of the need to change the oil in the automatic transmission on Grant is more of a marketing ploy. The fact is that the warranty period for the automatic transmission expires, but the service life of the automatic transmission, provided it operates on old oil, is greatly reduced.

It should also be added that transmission fluid, although slower than motor oils, still inevitably loses its beneficial properties. Taking into account the fact that the Grant has a “classic” hydromechanical automatic transmission, the ATF oil in such a box gets very hot in the torque converter when transmitting torque.

You can also note temperature changes, wear products of the box itself, contaminating the liquid, etc. It turns out that if the owner is interested in increasing the service life of the machine, the oil in the automatic transmission of Grants and any other car needs to be changed.

ATF change timing

In order not to spend money on overhauling the automatic transmission, experienced car owners advise changing the oil in the gearbox after 65 thousand km of driving the vehicle.

Since negatively influencing processes occurring inside the machine, both due to the fault of the car owner and natural ones, contribute to the rapid production of lubricant.

Removing the automatic transmission pan Grants

Such negative processes include:

  • an increase in the temperature in the box when slipping or driving off-road, as well as in countries with hot climates;
  • cold and abrupt starts in winter;
  • dirty filter device.

The oil in the Lada Xray automatic transmission ceases to perform the functions for which it was intended. Namely:

  • protection of metal parts from wear;
  • lubrication of machine components;
  • automatic transmission cooling.

Attention! The Jatco JF414E automatic transmission is very picky about the quality of the lubricant. Therefore, cheap analogues will quickly disable it.

The manufacturer indicates that the lubricant must be changed after 80 thousand kilometers. Experienced car owners and mechanics advise motorists who have a car with this gearbox to replace it much earlier than this period. Therefore, the recommended complete replacement, taken from practice, is 50 - 60 thousand kilometers.

Partial replacement must be performed after the vehicle has driven thirty thousand kilometers. Beforehand, every 10 thousand kilometers, experts advise checking the lubricant in the automatic transmission and adding it if necessary.

What does the manufacturer recommend?

AvtoVAZ recommends using Genuine GM EJ-1 ATF oil, or filling in a high-quality analogue of Nissan ATF Matic-S. The reliability and high beneficial properties of both oils are confirmed by many years of research, as well as test results. Both oils have official approval from AvtoVAZ. We can say that the same oil that is used for the previous generation Nissan Micra is suitable for the Lada Granta automatic transmission.

Naturally, there are other options. For example, among cheaper analogues, Aisin ATF AFW+ would be a very good product.

How to completely renew the lubricant

To completely change the oil, the car owner must:

  1. Repeat the steps described in the previous block “Draining old fluid”.
  2. You will only need to fill in half a liter of fresh lubricant.
  3. Then disconnect the return hose and extend it. Place one end in a large basin or stick it into a five-liter bottle with the other and attach it back to the return fitting.
  4. Ask your partner to start the engine. Now you need to watch the oil pouring into a basin or bottle.
  5. When it changes color to a lighter color, ask your partner to turn off the engine.
  6. Now you need to repeat all the steps that were described in the instructions for a partial oil change. That is, the car owner will need to remove the pan and clean it, replace the old filter device with a new one. Install everything back. The main thing is not to forget to apply sealant in the place where the pan gasket is connected to the bottom of the automatic transmission.
  7. Fresh lubricant must be added in small portions - 1 liter each.
  8. Start the engine, press the brake pedal, move the gear shifter through all positions. Keep the engine running and check the level.
  9. In total, a full shift should take five liters of lubricant.

What kind of oil is in the Lada Granta automatic transmission?

According to the manufacturer, the fluid in the Lada Granta automatic transmission does not require replacement and is designed for the entire service life of the automatic transmission. But we are adults and we understand that no liquid can retain its properties for a long time. And if you add to this constant loads in the form of towing a trailer, sudden acceleration, etc., then the oil service life is sharply reduced. Therefore, changing the oil in the automatic transmission will certainly not be superfluous. The optimal oil change interval for the Lada Granta automatic transmission is 100,000 km.

Nuances of choosing oil

Every Lada Granta owner will sooner or later have to face the need to change the automatic transmission oil. This is especially true for Russian motorists who operate their cars, to put it mildly, not in favorable climatic conditions. Taking into account severe weather conditions, as well as the specific quality of the road surface in our country, the car is constantly exposed to enormous loads, and at the same time the gearbox is also subject to overloads. In this regard, an urgent oil change or an unscheduled fluid change may be required. The frequency of replacement is ambiguous and depends on many weather factors. Thus, the automatic transmission oil change schedule for Lada Granta averages 20-30 thousand km. Let us immediately note that this is the opinion of experienced motorists who have been using the Granta for quite a long time. The fact is that the manufacturer himself does not recommend changing the oil, or advises changing it after 100 thousand kilometers, which is equivalent to the entire operation of the car for one owner. After all, often after reaching this mileage, the first owner sells the car. But we must admit that the need to change the oil in the automatic transmission will be required much earlier than this date.

General advice for everyone

  • An automatic transmission is more sensitive to dust than any manual transmission. This must be remembered even when changing the oil in the automatic transmission of Lada Grants. All funnels and tubes must be perfectly clean.
  • There is no need to increase the temperature of the box too much. The optimum is 45 degrees, but in general, if we are talking about an “automatic”, you can replace it with a “cold” one. But for greater efficiency, the box is “heated”, and then the “new” oil must also be heated.
  • When measuring the volume of liquid being drained, take into account the temperature - heated liquid expands.

Top 1. ZIC ATF Dexron 6

Rating (2021): 4.80

16 reviews from resources taken into account: Yandex.Market

The most affordable for automatic transmission The price of this transmission fluid is noticeably lower than that of other participants in the rating. However, in terms of the quality of gearbox service, it is not inferior to others.

  • Characteristics

    Average price: 556 rub./l

Synthetic transmission fluid, based on Yubase's own oil, is characterized by increased adhesion to transmission elements. This prevents the oil from completely settling in the crankcase, even if the car is idle for a long time. The liquid has a very low fluidity threshold - even at -50 Celsius it works, freezing only at -52.5 degrees. The oil ensures smooth gear shifting for the entire service life, saves fuel and extends the service life of the gearbox. Drivers also like the availability - the product is low priced and sold in many stores. But some buyers believe that they may stumble upon a fake.

Conclusion

Having considered the suitable options, you can decide on the best oil for the Lada Granta automatic transmission. It is better to use a quality product, which does not have to be expensive and original. This can be seen judging by the presence on the market of quite good analogues from the companies Mobil, Castrol, ZIC, ExxonMobil, Lukoil, etc.

Theory - watch the video!

4-speed transverse automatic transmission of the “mini” class for front-wheel drive - JF414 developed by the Japanese Jatco for cars with engines up to 1.6 liters.

It was the JF414 automatic that AvtoVAZ chose to install on the Lada Granta.

In addition to the Lada Granta, the JF414E has been installed on Nissan Almerias and Marches with engines up to 1.6 liters since 2013. In addition, it can be found on our rare Ad Van. This transmission is designed as a budget and reliable option for “long-lasting” cars. Competitor - Aisin AW60-40. Jatko classification means - JF414: J - Jatco, F - (Forward) front-wheel drive, 4 - number of stages, 14 - serial number of modification. E - electronic shift control.

More details about the machine

When choosing an automatic machine for the Grant, Tolyatti engineers faced the following conditions: - the box had to fit into the engine compartment of the Lada and, of course, had to be very simple and very reliable.

Another contender for the Lada hood can be considered practically the only competitor: Aisinovsky AW60-40. But Aisin Warner is considered uncompromising on prices and feels confident enough in the market to give special discounts to VAZ. Therefore, the JF414 variant from Ott Jatko turned out to be more interesting.

There were, of course, hypothetical versions of American boxes, such as 4F27E, but they were completely uncompetitive in many respects, including political ones.

Among the German boxes for Lada, ZF 4HP14 would be suitable. But the German gearbox, while highly reliable, is quite expensive, and ZF itself is not very active in the market for mini and micro class machines. Therefore, the marriage of Granta and Jatko seems a completely natural choice.

The only drawback of the Jatkov box is the narrow market for this class of machines. With the advent of CVTs, fewer and fewer manufacturers are installing reliable but expensive gearboxes on micro- and mini-class cars, and are increasingly choosing a cheaper and less resourceful CVT. In addition to VAZ, this box was installed on Nissan March for some time, but soon they switched to CVTs, leaving VAZ as the only consumer of this machine.

The JF414E uses all the latest electronics to control the valve body and torque converter, including linear (PWM) electric control solenoids to control the shift hydraulics with minimal power disruption.

In general, the JF414 gearbox was designed by Jatko according to VAZ’s technical specifications in order to be “indestructible” and outlast the car itself. A typical case of reinsurance, when a viral myth about the “fragility of the machine” is widespread among buyers.

The next generations of automatic transmissions for this class of car will have a choice between used Dzhatkov CVTs and European DSGs with a dry clutch (AMT), which are cheaper and live a brighter (for acceleration and fines), but short life.

Changing the oil and filter

The first machine maintenance is an oil change.
Although the oil is considered non-replaceable, (about burning oil) with frequent overloads of the machine, the oil soon becomes dirty and opaque and requires replacement.
JF414 itself is very unpretentious to oil and allows the use of not only the original Matic-S (EJ-1 ATF), but also non-original analogues such as Dexron VI. Although automatic transmission electricians say that the settings of the JF414 solenoids and valves are sensitive to the type of oil. The oil is checked (for quality and quantity) with a dipstick at operating temperature and topped up through the same hole. Some technicians check the oil level and quality using the overflow tube by unscrewing the pan plug. The oil is changed through several partial changes. An oil change should be done with the help of specialists who have experience in automatic transmission repair or who have studied the oil change process in detail. It has its own important features.

Filter JF414 - metal open with metal mesh - 327010. Our technicians rarely change such a filter during the first oil change; washing and cleaning the filter solves the main problems. The oil is changed first after 80-100 tkm of mileage, depending on the loads during operation and, as a result, on the degree of contamination of the oil, but usually by this time the oil still retains “working” transparency.

Masters install on older cars with worn iron in series with the coarse filter - external fine filter - 100019. The main filter fits into the cooling hose from the outside of the box and access to it for inspection and replacement can be made as easy as possible.

The main magnetic filter helps keep the oil clean and slows down wear on components. This is recommended for all older machines that have a standard filter with a metal mesh. Read more here.

The design of the hardware of this box was simplified as much as possible according to the tourist principle: “nothing superfluous,” but in the first year of running in, the first “childhood diseases” of this machine appeared:

In the first years, craftsmen complained about the needle bearing between the pump hub and the High package - #327227, which, due to design flaws, was clamped to the point of complete destruction. Bearing size may vary in thickness - (41.5 x 59 x 3.58). This problem was successfully solved during the first years of testing.

The Jatko design assumes a large margin of safety, but VAZ electronics engineers did not tighten the computer settings, prohibiting the driver from using the gas pedal to kill the box. Therefore, the driver can drive up to 200-400 tkm without major repairs, or he can kill the clutches with a kickdown by the end of the warranty period. Overhaul does not mean the end of the resource at all; the box itself is traditionally indestructible for Jatko and can travel up to a million km if simple rules of operation and repair are observed.
