Perhaps one of the main parameters of a car for a Russian buyer, especially those living outside the Moscow Circle, was and remains the vehicle’s ground clearance. Even city sedans, adapted by the manufacturer for Russian roads, can often demonstrate a ground clearance of 170-180 mm.
Among budget cars, the leader in the “ground clearance” category has long remained the Renault Logan and its co-platforms – Sandero, Sandero Stepway. XRay, which shared the pipeline and some of the technical solutions with them, was also positioned from the very beginning of development as having decent ground clearance.
Engines
The 2021 Lada Xray has three power units:
- HR16 engine with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 110 hp. With. (development of the Alliance) and five-speed manual transmission (development of the Alliance) - discontinued from June 2021;
-engine 21129 with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 106 hp. With. (developed by Lada) and manual transmission (developed by Alliance);

The least powerful version of the XRay accelerates from zero to one hundred kilometers per hour in 11.9 seconds (manual), a modification with a 114-horsepower engine in 10.3 seconds (manual), and the top version with a 1.8-liter engine in combination with a “robot” - in 10.9 seconds.
The base engine for the X Ray will be a VAZ 16-valve unit with a volume of 1.6 liters. The engine power will be 106 hp, and it will be coupled with a French manual gearbox JR5, assembled at AVTOVAZ. It was decided to abandon the VAZ “mechanics” because of its noise. Maximum speed is 170 km/h. Consumption 7.5 liters. Price 589 thousand rubles.
The second engine for the 2021 LADA XRAY is “a combination of Nissan’s H4 engine, also localized at VAZ, and the same JR5 “mechanics.” Obviously, we are talking about a 1.6-liter petrol unit with 110 hp. It is also installed on the Nissan Senta, although it does not produce 114 hp. 4 “horses” were lost due to “adaptation”. Mixed consumption will be 6.9 liters. The third engine for the LADA XRAY is a 1.8 liter VAZ unit producing 122 hp. and working in tandem with a VAZ automated manual transmission (AMT). With this engine, X-Ray will accelerate to “hundreds” in 10.9 seconds, and its top speed will be 183 km/h. Fuel consumption - 7.1 liters. Price from 669 thousand rubles.

The suspension of the new VAZ product was borrowed from the Renault Sandero (the new Lada is being built on the basis of the hatch), while it has different springs and shock absorbers, as a result of which the XRAY “completely lost the legendary Logan’s rolliness.”
An important point on the Lada Xray is the non-disabled traction control system TCS (or traction control as many call it). This system prevents wheel slipping and loss of traction, but sometimes it still interferes, for example, you can simply get stuck in the snow, since the wheels will slip and the system will block them. Dimensions
As was already known, the front-wheel drive version of the Lada X Ray 2021, which has a Renault Sandero platform and a hatchback body, will be released first. The body length of this model will be 4.20 m, and its wheelbase will be 2.60 m. Next to start production will be the Xray Cross SUV, based on the Renault Duster with two drive options - front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. There is no information yet about which of the options will be available at the base price, which became known earlier - 500 thousand rubles.

Considering that not all regions of Russia have ideal roads, many potential buyers, when choosing a new car, pay special attention to ground clearance. At the same time, they are interested in real numbers.
The thing is that often the parameters specified by the manufacturer turn out to be overestimated in practice. Of course, not everyone does this, and not always. However, the presence of this kind of precedents made many people rather skeptical about the data provided by the manufacturer. Here people trust the reviews of those who have already purchased the car they are interested in more.
Real ground clearance of the Lada X-Ray
Not long ago, the Volzhsky Automobile Plant began producing the XRay hatchback, which looks very much like a crossover. The very impressive ground clearance also contributed to this deceptive impression. According to the manufacturer, the clearance of X-Ray (Ray) is 195 millimeters
We will also present other figures that are important in terms of cross-country ability. In particular:
- front and rear overhangs – 830 and 743 millimeters;
- approach and departure angles are 21 and 34 degrees.
Meanwhile, the proverb “trust, but verify,” as it turns out, also applies to the figures announced by AvtoVAZ. No, there is no deception of buyers here. It’s just that the manufacturer, when measuring ground clearance, apparently “forgot” to install crankcase protection. With this element, the vehicle's ground clearance is reduced to 190 millimeters. However, this figure is good enough even for Russian roads somewhere in the outback. And the difference is not so critical as to declare deception - rather, a little trick. In fairness, it is worth recalling that all automakers are guilty of this kind of tricks, so VAZ is not doing anything reprehensible in this case.
I would also like to note one more point. Surely, many people know that for the production of X-Ray they did not develop a new platform, but borrowed it from the Renault Sandero Stepway, an affordable car with high ground clearance and front-axle drive. Accordingly, VAZ designers simply did not have any special options in terms of changing the ground clearance.
By the way, an excellent budget SUV was previously created on the same platform - Renault Duster, loved by many for its excellent ratio between price and performance characteristics. This model is taller than X-Ray. It turns out that there is still some room for maneuver, albeit small. Accordingly, it is quite possible that the Lada X-Ray will appear with a ground clearance of 205, or even 210 millimeters. However, for now these are just rumors.
However, a ground clearance of 195 (or 190) millimeters is quite enough for Russian roads, even somewhere in the outback. The hatchback confidently overcomes obstacles and uneven terrain, and the driver does not need to listen with bated breath to see if the car has sunk to the bottom. Still, we should not forget that X-Ray is not a full-fledged SUV or even a crossover. Manufacturers have repeatedly explained that this is just a tall hatchback. Therefore, the car’s ground clearance can be called sufficient.
In the process of adapting the platform to the production of X-Ray, the designers decided to change the steering settings. In practice, it turned out that it added not only positive aspects. Yes, the X-Ray's steering has become a little sharper than the Renault Sandero Stepway. However, this came at the cost of driver comfort. The thing is that due to the changed settings, all irregularities are very clearly transmitted to the steering wheel.
Apparently, the designers decided that their brainchild would be used mainly for active driving on city asphalt. This, by the way, is facilitated by a fairly powerful 122-horsepower 1.8-liter engine. Sharp handling combined with good dynamics is a truly excellent option for driving around the city. Well, there are many other cars for conquering serious off-road conditions.
Summary:
The current situation, that is, a systematically tightening bolt in terms of the amount of exhaust gases and their composition, suggests that the best years of diesel fuel in passenger cars are behind us. Further development of reliable diesel engines must strike a balance between technical feasibility and cost-effectiveness. Automotive companies are increasingly focusing on hybrid solutions or pure electric drive, which results in a noticeable reduction in the average carbon emissions of a number of vehicles.
Reliable diesel engines, already built with proper maintenance, will last for years to come. Are they a burden to the environment? Certainly. However, we must not forget that the need for fuel leads to the fact that diesel fuel emits carbon dioxide - a gas that is not poisonous, but is responsible for the greenhouse effect.

The naturally-aspirated VAZ-21179 engine with a power of 122 horsepower and a volume of 1800 cubic centimeters is paired with a 5-speed robotic gearbox.
The base engine for the car has a power of 106 horsepower and a volume of 1600 cubic centimeters. This unit is well known to motorists. It is equipped with electronically controlled fuel injection and distributed fuel injection. Among the features of the engine, it is worth noting the unique intake system. At low speeds, air passes through a short channel, turning a lean mixture into a rich one. This function made it possible to increase engine power throughout the entire operating range.
What will we build from?
It was immediately clear that the car would sooner or later appear on the assembly line. How, on what platforms, and what the engineers will hide under the hood - these mysteries haunted connoisseurs of the domestic automobile industry for two whole years. From time to time, unverified information came out about possible symbioses with ready-made VAZ models, then it was refuted, then again they talked about European car platforms that were living out their assembly line life.

- Skid prevention system.
- ABS – automatic brake locking during hard braking, stabilizing the car and facilitating the driving process.
- BAS is a system that increases pressure in the main line, which helps the car slow down if the brake pedal is pressed suddenly.
- TCS is a module that ensures a good car start on slippery or uneven surfaces. In case of slipping, the system will also lock the differential.
- EBD - this system distributes the braking force evenly along the axis, which protects the car from possible skidding.

The platform for the car was taken from the Renault Sandero, which already means energy intensity, excellent handling and high ground clearance of the Lada X Rey. The bottom and the power component have changed little. The body has received increased rigidity thanks to it, which also performs other important functions. The suspension, body and some components have been modified. The range of engines has changed.
The model range will be represented only by the “hatchback” body type; “station wagon” and “sedan” are not provided. The body was designed with the help of Renault and Nissan using innovative digital technologies. With a common platform with other AVTOVAZ models, manufacturers tried to achieve maximum external differences and improve technical characteristics.
It is stated that the design contains about 600 original parts, which are used for the first time at VAZ. The manufacturer plans that more than 70% of components will be manufactured at Russian factories.

The front suspension of the Lada X Ray is independent, MacPherson type. It has significant differences from all front-wheel drive Lada models produced today. The modified suspension features levers that are attached to the subframe using silent blocks. At the end of the lever there is a ball pin. The rear suspension is a semi-independent torsion beam. This suspension is reliable and improves driving performance.
What engine does the Lada X Rey have?
The manufacturer settled on three possible engine options. All of them are gasoline and quite:
- The basic VAZ-21129, which has proven itself and is widely used in other AVTOVAZ models.
- Modernization of the intake system made it possible to increase engine power from 98 hp. up to 106 hp At low speeds, air is supplied through long intake channels, and at high speeds, through short ones, which ensures a change in the composition of the fuel mixture. The engine works with a 5-speed gearbox from Renault, which is assembled at AVTOVAZ.
- Gasoline engine developed by Renault-Nissan (Nissan calls it HR16, Renault calls it H4M). The development of 2006 is widely installed on cars. The engine works in tandem with a 5-speed manual transmission from Renault.
- The modern and most powerful VAZ-21128 engine. Engine performance has been improved through a redesign aimed at increasing the piston stroke. The connecting rod and piston group from the Federal-Mogul company is used, production is carried out by a subsidiary of AVTOVAZ.
The engine is paired with a robotic automatic transmission. AMT (robot box) is a domestic development. The VAZ manual transmission was taken as the basis, and the German company ZF worked on the control electronics. The box is assembled in Tolyatti.

Overgrown
The Lada X-Ray is positioned by the concern as a crossover, but in fact it is very reminiscent of a city hatchback with high ground clearance. In essence, this is how it is. Nevertheless, the car looks quite attractive.
It is worth highlighting the front bumper with its now signature X-shaped configuration and chrome trim, a convex hood, and expressive sidewalls. The head optics are equipped with LED running lights, which gives it a respectable appearance. The stern looks unusual due to the sloping pillars and the rear bumper made of black plastic.
With aspirations for more
The interior decoration of the Lada X Rey can be considered one of the most memorable in the class. Despite the budget orientation of the model, its interior looks colorful. The dashboard in the wells pleases the eye with clear digitization, an informative on-board computer, and the multimedia system screen is located on the center console. The latter allows you to play videos, project images from removable media, and also display an overview from the rear view camera.
A driver's seat with optimal rigidity prevents fatigue during long driving. However, its lateral support is not very pronounced, which is why the body is not clearly fixed. It seems that the rear sofa can accommodate three people, but don’t get your hopes up - only two riders with a height of no more than 175 centimeters will be at ease here.
The luggage compartment is modest in numbers - only 360 liters. But it is worth highlighting the correct, rectangular shape of the loading area, which allows you to rationally place your luggage.
The makings of a crossover
The most powerful engine in the line is the 1.8 liter unit. It is combined with a robotic gearbox and has good agility at medium speeds. But the transmission does not want to drive fast - it pauses when changing gears. Moreover, at the moment the clutch discs close, a strong push occurs, which does not have the best effect on the smoothness of the ride.
X-Ray is controlled impressively - as if it weighs at least two tons. The steering wheel is not very responsive to the driver's commands, and as speed increases, the effort on the steering wheel remains weightless, which forces you to be more careful when maneuvering. However, the Russian car is capable of turning quite quickly - the rolls are moderate, while the drift of the front axle occurs smoothly and predictably.
Review of Lada Priora (entire model line) - belated modernization
The suspension can be accused of being too stiff - indeed, it overcomes minor bumps with noticeable shocks. But the energy consumption of the shock absorber struts is acceptable - even when the cabin is fully loaded, they do not break through.

Changes to the exterior and interior
Let's start with the appearance. Like Cross models of other lines, a distinctive feature of the off-road version is a protective body kit. X-Ray Cross got it too. Additionally, the designers slightly redesigned the front end.
The designers slightly stylized the chrome inserts on the bumper and side niches. Its bottom is now decorated with a black protective overlay, on top of which a curved silver skirt is placed.
The wheel arches, sills and bottom of the doors have wide black plastic linings that fit quite well into the appearance of the car.
The obvious differences between the rear of the Cross and the base X-Ray include slightly modified rear lights, a massive trim on the rear bumper with a silver insert, a black spoiler, and a “fin” on the roof. The off-road model also acquired roof rails, which were so lacking in the regular version.
It is noted that this version has increased ground clearance, which in the base model was already considerable - 195 mm. Now it is indicated that it will exceed 200 mm, although the exact figure has not yet been indicated. Note that the ground clearance has been increased for the most part thanks to the new 17-inch wheels that will be equipped with this car.
As for the remaining overall dimensions - length, width and height, if they differ in the Cross version from the regular version, it will be only slightly and due to the same body kit.
Next is the interior. There are also innovations in the cabin, but not many. In the presented concept, the interior was decorated with linings and inserts in body color on the front panel, door panels, and seats.
The designers also thought of installing a central armrest, which is not even optionally available in the basic version.
Another distinctive feature is the backlighting of the dashboard in the body color and the door sills with the version name.
But we note that all these features are present in the concept, and whether mass production models will receive them is still unknown.
Design
The exterior design style of the new Lada XRay Cross is made in the classic AvtoVAZ traditions of modern models. The X-face of the front part and the side stampings on the wings and doors - all this is fully consistent with the corporate style of AvtoVAZ. The head optics and diffuser of the cross-hatch stand out effectively due to the installed chrome decorative inserts. The rear is equipped with a short glass on the tailgate and a metal trim at the bottom of the bumper. The outlines of the entire body are elegantly emphasized by a plastic body kit that runs along the entire lower part of the cross-hatch.
The interior decoration of the domestic all-terrain hatchback is made in a two-tone design, and in the most top modifications the interior will also receive decorative inserts. The front panel is equipped with a classic analog instrument panel, as well as a multimedia system with support for the Yandex.Auto service.
The interior seats are finished in fairly decent quality, and the lateral support is on par with the best foreign representatives of the SUV segment.
Service cost
The costs of servicing and maintaining a Russian representative of the SUV segment are much lower than those of its foreign “classmates”. This is not surprising, because domestic models have always been distinguished by their practicality, simplicity and the presence of a large number of cheap spare parts.
But before the car owner begins self-repair of the 2021 Lada XRay Cross, he must wait 36 months from the date of purchase or 100,000 km, during which the manufacturer’s warranty will be valid for all major components and assemblies of the car. At the same time, the car owner needs to visit an authorized dealer in a timely manner every 15,000 km for scheduled maintenance. As a result of such maintenance, the owner of the Lada XRay Cross will need to pay from 4,000 to 8,000 rubles each time, depending on the work performed at the service. This list includes changing oils, filters and various consumables.
It is worth noting that cars with a 113 hp engine installed in them. will require much larger financial investments. And the whole point is that this French-made motor is distinguished by the high cost of its components. In particular, a banal replacement of spark plugs can cost the owner 25,000 rubles more than the same procedure carried out with Russian engines of 106 or 122 hp. The most expensive for a unit produced by specialists from Renault will be the final scheduled maintenance. It is carried out at 90,000 km. The fact is that for an amount of approximately 50,000 rubles, the car owner will be offered to replace the timing belt.
Body coating thickness
Now it’s worth taking a closer look at the thickness of the body covering. Only high-quality paint can prevent premature corrosion of the metal and aging of the car as a whole. In addition, the body coating affects the aerodynamics of the car. Today AvtoVAZ uses only paint that fully complies with all European standards.
Let us remind you once again that previously the domestic manufacturer used a paint coating with a thickness of no more than 100 microns. Today this figure has increased by 60 units and is 160 microns.

Lada Xray Cross will be offered exclusively with a 122-horsepower 1.8-liter engine in combination with a five-speed manual transmission or “robot”, as well as front-wheel drive. From zero to the first hundred, the cross-hatchback accelerates in 10.9 seconds (manual transmission) or 12.7 seconds (AMT), and the maximum speed is 180 and 176 km/h, respectively.
Another important change for the Xray Cross version was the appearance of rear disc brakes instead of drum brakes. Production of the new compact hatchback Lada XRAY is planned to begin in 2021 at the AVTOVAZ site (Tolyatti). Lada received its current name due to the fact that it has many elements made in the shape of the letter “X”. This applies to the radiator grille, as well as the side parts of the Lada car. The rear of the Xrey, in the form of a special hemisphere, blends harmoniously with the roof. If you look at the Lada car from this angle, then this design gives the car a simple and attractive look. Here preference is given to living and natural lines. The wheel arches are marked with small arcs, on top of which there are curly lines. If you compare the internal design of the X-Rey with the design of previous Lada models, it has changed quite a lot.
The lower part of the front bumper has become much more massive. The developers claim that this helps improve aerodynamics. It also houses round fog lights. The interior of the car is also quite original. The simple dashboard is quite informative. The instruments are located in three round compartments; to the right of the driver is the on-board computer screen. The sports steering wheel has a pronounced texture and looks original and modern. There are nice ventilation deflectors on the sides of the display, and the climate control system is located below. The interior is decorated with high-quality plastic. The chairs are covered with durable and beautiful fabric. Due to the fact that the front seats provide lateral support and the ability to adjust, it is very comfortable to sit in them.
The designs of the steering, power part of the body, suspension, and braking system turned out to be a complete coincidence with the design of the French Sandero model. However, the all-wheel drive version of the Cross has many significant differences.
VAZ developers claim that the prototype for creating a 4x4 crossover platform is the Renault Duster. The French equivalent has both all-wheel drive and separate front-wheel drive. The advantage of the serial Lada 4x4 is that it will be significantly cheaper than its French counterpart.

The car as a whole is not bad, but if you consider it in isolation from other cars. And in this case, it would be possible to charge 600-700 thousand rubles, but, alas, there is a Renault Sandero and the same Lada Vesta.
