From the very beginning of sales, AVTOVAZ has been installing a modified VAZ 2182 automated transmission (AMT with version 2.0) on the updated Lada Granta family. “Robot” received a number of improvements and new operating modes, which had a positive impact on user ratings. The article presents reviews from auto experts and owners of these cars.
Pedalless existence: Russian drivers don’t want to push
More and more cars with automatic transmissions are being purchased in Russia - about a million last year, which is 59.4% of total sales.
Against the backdrop of a declining market, cars with automatic transmissions showed growth, while manual transmissions, on the contrary, are losing popularity. Whether the third pedal will become unnecessary and which “automatic” is better, Izvestia looked into it. According to the analytical agency Autostat, in 2021, sales of cars with automatic transmissions for the first time exceeded sales of cars with manual transmissions. Since then, their share has continued to grow; according to last year’s results, it added 3%.
Pre-production tests
However, the Granta, equipped with an automated manual transmission, is now on the agenda; sales begin in February. To approach this date fully armed, a number of tests were carried out. One of the pre-production cars immediately went to Germany so that AvtoVAZ's partners from ZF, for their part, could conduct their own tests and allow the car to be put into production.
Starting with the Priora platform, cars have undergone a huge number of tests in various climatic zones and under a variety of programs. Tests took place in the Alps and Altai mountains with the participation of partners from Germany, at low temperatures reaching -55°C, in the Far North in Surgut. Speed tests were successfully carried out at the Porsche test site with humidity of almost 100 percent and temperatures exceeding +30°C. These tests were followed by accelerated road tests of 80,000 km and 100,000 km. Difficulties that arose during the testing process were resolved promptly, quickly and professionally.
The new gearbox is a product of Russian engineering, since the burden of solving most of the problems fell on VAZ’s shoulders. Engineers from Russia have demonstrated that their level is not inferior to the quality of engineers in the best European companies.
In general, the design of the new box consists of 80% Russian parts, and this says a lot.
Even during the period of joint work with the Germans on adapting the gearbox for the Priora, it was VAZ engineers who managed to quickly achieve smooth switching, which other companies cannot achieve for a long time. It is difficult in foreign boxes and with quick engagement - the transmission resource is insufficient.
An important advantage of the VAZ AMT is the ability of the system to adapt to the driver’s driving style - both calm and aggressive driving is possible. What else distinguishes the box from a traditional automatic transmission: at -40°C outside, the box makes it possible to start moving as soon as the engine is started. But fuel economy is, of course, the biggest plus.
Lada Granta: manual gearbox
So, when it comes to the VAZ Lada Granta model, a manual or manual transmission is the most popular type of unit on this car. The reason is obvious, since “mechanics” is the most affordable, reliable and at the same time simplest transmission, both in maintenance and repair.
As for mechanics, the Lada Granta 2181 cable manual transmission began to be installed on the car in 2012, but later this gearbox was modernized, as a number of certain shortcomings quickly appeared during active operation.
One way or another, the mechanics of the Lada Granta manual transmission are based on the same well-known 5-speed gearbox, which was installed on the VAZ 2108. The first versions of the Grants received a 2180 gearbox. This gearbox received a shift rod, the gear selection mechanism was located at the bottom parts inside the unit housing.
The same box was installed on the Lada Kalina of the first generations. Subsequently, VAZ introduced a modified gearbox with the index 2181 and 2190. Upon closer examination, the Lada Granta gearbox, device and a number of features have changed noticeably compared to the previous initial version.
First of all, the gearbox became a cable one (the gear shift rod was replaced with cables, and the gear selection mechanism was at the top and was placed separately, that is, outside the body). Also, the first and second speeds were equipped with a multi-cone synchronizer, and the clutch housing also underwent changes.
It should also be noted that the oil volume in the Grant gearbox has decreased by almost a third (from 3.3 liters to 2.2). The use of cables in the design instead of a rod made it possible to significantly reduce the level of vibrations on the body, achieve higher speeds and increased clarity of switching.
The driver no longer needs to search for a gear for a long time before engaging it; the gearbox has begun to work more smoothly. It would seem that the unit was modern and improved, but in reality a serious problem immediately appeared. When driving, the VAZ 2181 gearbox began to howl and make noise.
The howl and noise of the gearbox when driving were minimized, but it was not possible to completely get rid of the characteristic shortcomings. For example, second gear may engage with a characteristic crackling and crunching sound, and shifts may not be as clear as they should be with a cable drive.
Also, some car enthusiasts note that the mechanics continued to howl in second and third gears, increased vibration was noted during active acceleration, the gearbox lever may rattle at 3rd speed, etc.
Design of a robotic gearbox AMT or VAZ 2182
The idea of creating their own automatic machine was nurtured by AvtoVAZ designers for many years, but they lacked the qualifications. Therefore, we decided to turn to foreign specialists again.
At first, negotiations took quite a long time with the famous Italian company Magneti Marelli, but the offer received later from the German concern ZF turned out to be much more profitable. As a result, AvtoVAZ management decided to equip the currently most modern domestic mechanics, the VAZ 2180, with electromechanical actuators from a German company.

The result was a typical robot with an electric drive of a single clutch disc. Such models were popular among European or Japanese manufacturers ten years ago. At the moment, almost all the leading automobile concerns in the world have long abandoned them in favor of an even more modern transmission: preselective robots with two clutches.
This issue of Good Mechanics is entirely dedicated to the very first domestic manual transmission.

Advantages and disadvantages of AMT
Among the many advantages of the “robot” are:
- 1. Cost-effective;
Fuel consumption in a car with an installed robot depends on driving style and is 6...6.5 l/100 km in mixed mode, which allows saving up to 30% of fuel compared to a sedan or liftback LADA Granta AUTOMAT and up to 10% compared to cars , equipped with conventional “mechanics”.
- 2. High reliability;
AMT is based on a manual gearbox, which is much less susceptible to breakdowns than an automatic transmission. In addition, the optimal operating modes of the robot are determined electronically (there is no “human factor”), which significantly increases the service life of the engine. Repairing an AMT is practically no different from repairing a manual transmission. In addition, it is much simpler and cheaper than automatic transmission.
- 3. Simplicity of design and unpretentious operation.
Electromechanical structural elements do not require maintenance or adjustment during operation. All connectors and electronic components are reliably protected from dust and dirt. The robot is adapted to difficult operating conditions and ensures operation when exposed to temperatures ranging from -40...+50 degrees Celsius.
- 4. Vibration comfort.
There is no mechanical connection between the selector and the gearbox, so there is no vibration of the mode shift handle.
LADA Granta on a robot
Existing disadvantages of AMT:
- When starting to move, LADA Granta with AMT may roll back a little.
- Unlike an automatic transmission, the robot cannot change gears without losing traction torque. This results in barely noticeable jerks during gear changes.

I wish you all good health! Reading reviews is of course pleasant and useful, now you also need to make your contribution, so don’t judge harshly, especially for mistakes (I was in a hurry, and I want to write more + no, the beech is stiff and the buttons are small).

Over 11 years of driving experience, I personally owned: the first was my grandfather’s Moskvich 412 (whatever this car couldn’t stand from me), then the VAZ 2105 1.3 85 onwards. on gas (after Moskvich, a comfortable and stable car), VAZ 2106 2006. (drove for about 2 years), then an almost new 2105 (injection 5-speed, also drove for about 2 years), Toyota Platz 2001. (I got the car in excellent condition, drove it for 3 years, didn’t know any problems, but I wanted more and lost it), Nissan Cefiro 1998. 2.5 210 hp Neo-Di engine which does not run on gasoline below 95, the car is cool but already old and it eats gasoline normally + expensive insurance, taxes (drove for 2 months and sold it), Honda Civic 2000. 1.5 (8 valve automatic - I was shocked myself) right-handed sedan made for the Emirates, no ABS, no airbags, terrible heater. but there is a leather interior and climate control (the car was received in poor technical condition. I thought I’d do it little by little, but it didn’t work out due to financial difficulties, I thought it was about to break down BUT! the car was almost unchanged in technical parts, traveled 3 -and years... low bow to her, the car is really very reliable and durable, although it is designed for good roads and active driving, so the chassis is quite harsh). All cars are worthy of special attention, but we are not talking about them now. And now. TA-DAM! New Lada Granta))
Don’t delay diagnostics and repairs
By the way, maintenance usually only means changing the oil and filter, although it would also be nice to monitor the oil level during each routine maintenance. But, firstly, the box may require firmware updates (especially if we are talking about new models), additional operations as part of service or recall campaigns. Secondly, it is important not to delay diagnostics and repairs when signs of a malfunction appear (shocks and shocks during switching, vibrations during start-up and acceleration), since further driving can lead to more serious troubles, and as a result, more expensive repairs.
Impressive result of good work
As a result, we can come to the conclusion that the VAZ team managed to create a good “robot”. What is especially impressive is that the project initially included unification, allowing the design to be quickly adapted to a number of models. The new AvtoVAZ product is in no way inferior to its analogues. From what is known, no unit with a “robot” has such elastic and smooth operation of the power unit.
Therefore, the “traditional” Jatco “automatic” has been replaced by a new product. This happened because VAZ’s “robot” is really quite good and is capable of satisfying the needs of the most demanding drivers. But the partnership with the Japanese continues, because it is necessary to give potential buyers maximum choice.
Praise and nothing more
Despite all the above shortcomings, the car is gaining a lot of positive reviews. Due to the fact that the AvtoVAZ company considers this project to be the most successful, which combines all the positive characteristics of previous cars. Proof of these words are many videos posted on the Internet with admiration and pride in the form of special custom tuning.
The car collected many positive reviews in 2013-2014. During these periods there was a peak in car sales; they were constantly bought for taxis. This means that drivers consciously went to purchase the highest quality car, the resources of which will be used for wear and tear. After all, a taxi is “on wheels” for almost 24 hours and constantly on different routes.
Car owners often call Grant an all-terrain vehicle because it “feels” exactly the same:
- on city roads;
- on country roads;
- in field;
- In the woods;
- fishing;
- on the hunt.
Each car owner covers the first 30,000 kilometers in a different time, some in 3 years, and others in a year and a half. This mileage is already a symbolic indicator of the quality of the car.
The description of its advantages from drivers over the subsequent 2015-2017 years simply does not fit on one page:
- quick completion of scheduled technical inspection due to the absence of serious malfunctions;
- excellent heating system;
- spacious interior;
- high ground clearance (allows you to overcome snowdrifts);
- relatively low fuel consumption (compared to similar analogues);
- good value for money.
Many car owners, and we are no exception, agree that the Granta is the most economical car, from cost to fuel consumption and repair costs.
And knowing the desire of many residents of Moscow and the Moscow region, as well as guests of our big city, to try themselves as drivers of domestic models - including the Lada Granta - we simply could not help but replenish our fleet with these cars.
If you are thinking about purchasing a new VAZ classic or just want to “drive” without extra costs, then perhaps a daily rental at very competitive prices from our company is exactly what you need to get to know this car better than on any test drive !

Will disassembling the manual transmission help eliminate the howling?
Most Lada car owners, having tried the methods listed above, calm down, manage to get used to the noise and continue driving their car. But some are ready to go all the way, so they decide to disassemble the box themselves or contact a service center for this service. Is it possible to achieve the desired result using this complex procedure?
Sometimes when opening the box, significant defects in individual gears are revealed. In this case, the transmission usually makes a loud noise when engaging a particular gear. There may also be problems with the clutch and release bearing. Sometimes replacing these parts solves the problem.

In most cases, installing new parts does not make the gearbox quiet, because all gears are made on the same equipment, which, as already mentioned, does not allow for an ideal configuration.
The procedure for removing and disassembling the gearbox is lengthy and expensive, but may not yield results, so it is hardly worth going through the gearbox if howling is the only problem.
