After the complete withdrawal of the tenth family of cars from production, the AvtoVAZ conveyor was occupied by cars called “Lada-Priora”. And, although the manufacturer stubbornly insists that the Lada Priora is not a restyling of the previous model, but a completely new, redesigned car, buyers treat such a statement by VAZ with irony. In this connection, the current offer among budget station wagons on the domestic market is the station wagons of the Priora family. However, having left the conveyor belt in Togliatti, the once popular 2111 station wagons began to be offered among the model range of cars of the Ukrainian concern “Bogdan”.
A car with a new nameplate appeared on the Russian market at the beginning of last 2010 and from the very beginning began to be in steady demand among car enthusiasts. Comparing the Bogdan-2111 station wagon with its more advanced relative, the Lada-Priora station wagon, the conclusion arises that the more recent car from Togliatti is nothing more than dust in the eyes of a famous brand, but for more serious money. There are, of course, differences between the two cars, however...
Bogdan is equipped with two gasoline engines, 1.6 liters, with a capacity of 80 and 89 horsepower. The base price of a Ukrainian car is 293.5 thousand rubles, while the Lada Priora starts at 336.3 thousand. True, the Togliatti car is offered with a single engine, the same volume of 1.6 liters, but with a power of 98 horsepower. The most popular Bogdan configuration among buyers is a car equipped with alloy wheels (identical to the wheels on the Priora) and foglights. For this addition to the base they ask for another six and a half thousand rubles.
The main difference between the two cars, with the exception of some external body elements and lighting equipment, are changes in the front suspension and the presence of an airbag for the driver in the Priora. But the presence of alloy wheels on the Priora is only possible in the “Lux” configuration, which also includes an anti-lock braking system, a front passenger airbag and some other little things. This car already costs 399 thousand rubles. Bogdan with a more powerful engine differs in price by only 6.5 thousand rubles. Having paid 329 thousand rubles for a Ukrainian car, the buyer will receive electric power steering, central door locking, a pair of power windows, a folding rear seat and air conditioning.
Even the instrument panel in such a car will be like that of a Lada Priora. The minimum cost of a car from Tolyatti equipped with air conditioning will be 372 thousand rubles. But the Ukrainian color range is small. The car is painted in only four colors: black, dark green, blue and silver. All colors are metallic. As for the warranty period, for a car from Ukraine it is two years or 60 thousand kilometers, with a service interval of 10 thousand kilometers. On the Lada Priora, the plant establishes a guarantee of the same 60 thousand kilometers, but not for two, but for three years of operation, with a mandatory service visit after 15 thousand kilometers.

Two differences, but are they big...
We sit in the “top ten” - the car has certainly become outdated, but it has not yet become a “time machine”... The interior of the VAZ classic, which is still in production, can take you even further - several decades ago, and the exterior even further...
Large keys on the edges of the dashboard were popular in the interiors of Audi, Citroen, and Rover in the late 1980s, and the development of the VAZ 2110 began at that time. From an ergonomic point of view, the idea is not bad, but it was not implemented in the best way — the steering wheel overlaps the indicators on the keys. If only it were a little smaller... Maybe they planned this during development, but they didn’t have time to add power steering, and then a new “unified” steering wheel appeared. The result of the compromise is cheaper, but not more convenient. By the way, due to the gradual modernization of the “ten” and its slow transition to the Priora, cars produced recently have a “Prior” “tidy”, and with it a different torpedo, without keys on the visor.
A commercial VAZ-21104 from a car dealership, ready for shipment to the client after pre-sale preparation, is noticeably different from cars with a retuned suspension. Modified camber with the maximum recommended castor and stretching between the front supports works wonders. Control accuracy and directive force become normal. The “stock” car has an unusually slow response and simply huge play in the steering wheel.
The Priora has a torsionally stiffer body by 40%, which makes itself felt - the car behaves completely differently. Even though its electric power steering is connected to the same “slow” ten-wheel rack and therefore the car is still quite sluggish to drive, but it is quite “solid” and its behavior in turns can be predicted. The power steering is quite adequate and provides confident, responsive action at moderate speeds. In tight S-shaped turns you have to turn the steering wheel more than you would like, but Priora perceives the driver’s commands more accurately than its predecessor. It is quite possible that with the normal 185 tires that are announced for the Priora, everything will become even better, but for now the car is shod with 175/65 R14.
Apparently they did a good job on the sound insulation of the Lada Priora. If we compare the acoustic comfort with the VAZ 2110, then in the Priora the noise of the transmission is almost inaudible, and everything else has become noticeably quieter... The difference in the engines is even more noticeable. The VAZ-21124 engine is far from a fountain. The volume was increased to meet more stringent emission standards (at that time in Russia an “obligation” was introduced to comply with at least the outdated Euro 2. The modernization of the power unit was not carried out in the most successful way. The 16-valve engine pulls well at medium speeds and is frankly sluggish at high speeds In fact, the difference between 8- and 16-valve engines turned out to be insignificant...
Priora has a more advanced VAZ-21126 engine, which not only spins up faster and is quieter, but is also much more lively at high speeds, which is what the old engines lacked.
Comparative measurements of the interiors of both cars brought an unexpected result. The dimensions of the body have not changed, but the seats in the Lada Priora turned out to be 15-30 mm higher than the “tenth” seats. Drivers of average height are tolerable, but tall drivers are unlikely to be happy. The only hope is that the thin seat padding will quickly sag. The developers of the ashtray deserve a special “Thank you” with a capital T - those who get behind the wheel of a Priora have every chance to quit the bad habit. It is now almost impossible to use the ashtray, but it closes much better!
The most important thing in Russian cars is the gaps between the body panels. This is a real scourge of the “ten” - on every second car it won’t be a big problem to stick your fingers into the gap between the hood and the body, and this can be done around the entire perimeter. The stamps for “Prior” exterior body panels were developed anew, so the lion’s share of such flaws disappeared into oblivion. This is most noticeable by the absence of a joint between the rear pillar and the wing, which was previously covered by a necessarily curved plastic trim. The gaps between the new trunk lid and the body have also been reduced by almost one and a half times.
Calculations and miscalculations
A regular 16-valve “ten” in the “Norma” configuration can be purchased for about 10 thousand foreign money. Moreover, this amount has every chance to include a mandatory set of additional options, such as anti-corrosive treatment, wheel arch liners, and engine compartment protection. If we talk about the Lada Priora, then even for a “naked” car you will need to pay about 1 thousand more from your own pocket for the same foreign money. And if you buy the same anticorrosion, alarm and simple music from Priora, then you can shell out at least 1 thousand more. In other words, if you buy a “ten”, you can get a good one and a half to two thousand dollars. But in this case, you will not always get 14-inch alloy wheels, and you certainly will not have electric power steering, a new design (well, at least a little prettier), improved sound insulation and a comfortable steering wheel with an airbag, which is possible when needed won't even miss your head. If the issues with “casting” and “anti-noise” are completely solvable, then it is expensive to radically improve controllability, and it is almost impossible to improve safety. But if we take into account all these improvements, and especially the improved handling, then there is practically no point in buying a “ten”. Although there will always be people who want to save money and every product will find its buyer.
To summarize, we admit that the Lada 2170 Priora is a step in the right direction, it’s a pity that it’s small and belated. The improvements are visible only to those who have not tried a good foreign car, and there are fewer and fewer of them left... In other words, the Priora has many advantages over the “ten”, but only... the owners of the “ten” can fully appreciate them.
Lada Priora is a pretty successful restyling, but it would have been 5-6 years earlier...
More modern appearance, good body quality, airbag and improved handling due to body rigidity. — Traditional low build quality, uncomfortable seats for a tall driver, minor changes in ergonomics.
Lada 110 is a good solution for its time (12 years ago)... But, unfortunately, its quality was never brought to an acceptable level.
Good aerodynamics, reasonable price. — Very mediocre workmanship and assembly quality, especially the body, rather high noise level, “sluggish”, “lagging” and unclear handling, uncomfortable steering wheel.
I bought a new one at the showroom, January 2012, price 380,000 rubles. Before that there was an Eleventh Lux 1.6 sixteen-valve 89 hp. sold with 156,000 km mileage. There were some electrical problems, but the car was satisfactory for the price, interior transformation, low fuel consumption with good dynamics and ground clearance of 17 cm..
The big minus was that there was no air conditioning; in summer it was hot in traffic jams. For this reason, the choice fell on the Priora station wagon because analogues of the Kia Seed station wagon, Chevrolet Lacetti station wagon, Ford Focus station wagon cost about 600,000 rubles, and Largus did not exist at that time, and I didn’t want one with mileage either. You might run into a pig in a poke. In general, in order.
At 3000 km I changed the oil to Shell Helix 10v 40 semi-synthetic and SKT filter. At about 10,000 km the left low beam lamp burned out. After replacement, it burned out again after 5000-6000 km. I installed expensive Osrams for 1300 rubles. The left one also burned down without even passing a couple of thousand. I bought it at Globus for 350 rubles, now everything is ok. I changed the rear license plate lamps a couple of times. Oil change every 10,000 km only shell. At 30,000 km the timing tension bearing whistled. I was busy looking for something that was sold separately and not as a set, but I found it for 450 rubles at a local store.
At 40,000 km the diode bridge burned out, I installed a 100 amp from Viburnum for 500 rubles, the original one was 115 amps, now when I turn everything on: the lights. heater, air conditioner, then the charge relay starts blinking. By the way, I calmly unscrewed the bottom bolt on the generator, I didn’t even remove the compressor, I just moved it to the side. Chips on the hood rust and have to be treated. Now the flight has been normal for 54,800 km. The stove began to heat better, by the way, I didn’t change the cabin filter during the time and my heater resistor was damaged, the service center soldered it for 700 rubles, and a new one costs 5300 rubles. Overall, my wife and I are pleased. We are not going to change it yet.

Let's check how the cars of these two brands cope on the country's roads. To begin with, let's compare the technical characteristics of both proposed models.
The modern, harmonious proportions of Kalina are pleasing with their streamlinedness compared to the angular, at first glance, 111th VAZ. Body lines without visible gaps. The doors open 90 degrees, and the trunk opens 10 cm wider than that of the “eleventh” and is clearly fixed, which is convenient for owners. The trunk door can be closed from the inside. For comparison, the trunk of the VAZ 2111 is in no way inferior, and even superior in size.
Inside the cabin there is relative silence, no engine detonation, no crackling of the front panel, no creaking seats, in comparison with the same VAZ 111. The insides of the “eleventh” are noticeably different from the Kalina, but the advantages of the 111 are the possibility of greater cargo transportation. Also, the “eleventh” can easily accommodate people with fairly large dimensions.
In comparison with the Zhiguli of the Soviet period - heaven and earth. The seat of the Lada 2111 is not at all suitable for a long trip, it contributes to poor posture, which is not at all unimportant during a long trip. The interior has an elegant panel, pleasant to the touch and the overall appearance is impressive, but it cannot compare with the high-quality design and ergonomics of the front panel of the Kalina.
Soft curves blend proportionally with the built-in computer and other essential accessories. The buttons on the panel are impeccable and the handles of the microclimate systems rotate without any effort on the part of the owner.
Kalina’s significant superiority over the “eleventh” is its modernized interior; the space in front of the rear seats has not been affected, despite its smaller dimensions compared to its rival. The upholstery is made in the best colors and from quality materials. The car has an excellent viewing angle of the road due to the high seating position and large mirrors.
The dimensions of the Kalina (length: 4040 mm, width: 1700 mm) are more compact, 24.5 cm shorter than the “eleventh” (length: 4285 mm, width 1680 mm), which is especially convenient when maneuvering on tight and narrow streets, it is easier to park in our “soviet” courtyards, while maintaining space inside the car.
Of course, the capacity of the VAZ 2111 is much larger, the loading height is smaller (by 80 mm), the threshold is lower, and when you extend the seats in the cabin, you can transport long-sized luggage, but other advantages of the Kalina overshadow these minor shortcomings. For example, the height-adjustable steering wheel is optimal in size, and the on-board computer fits well into the design of the panel. The seats are modern, comfortable and easy to fold.
The stove has air flow guides, unlike the VAZ 2111, where the air flow goes to the bottom and unevenly heats the interior, the stove itself is powerful and after 15 minutes warming up in the car is ensured. The interior color is made in light soft colors, so the interior volume is visually larger.
The doors of the car open wide, making it easy for the driver and passengers to get in. In comparison with the “eleventh”, in which the backrest latches are pulled out with great difficulty. As mentioned above, the VAZ 2111 benefits from its spaciousness, comfort is maintained, an advantageous solution is to install roof rails, this additionally allows you to transport up to fifty kilograms of luggage.
Both cars have an immobilizer, central locking, electric windows on the front doors, and athermal windows.
The level of interior assembly of the Lada Kalina in terms of ergonomics and the quality of the latest materials has taken a significant step forward. Newly purchased cars retain the smell for a long time; perhaps, over time, this defect will self-liquidate.
The engine is equipped with the latest electronic fuel injection and ignition control system; thanks to this advantage, the car passes the most stringent and thorough requirements for reducing toxicity. And the reduction in toxic emissions is a consequence of the advanced new generation engine.
We draw a conclusion. Kalina is represented by an 8-valve 1.6-liter engine (81 hp) and a five-speed manual transmission in comparison with the VAZ 2111 - a 16-valve design with a capacity of 89 hp, however, Kalina comes straight from the very bottom, while The sixteen-valve engine has to accelerate to more than 3500 rpm.
Let's try to load our cars to capacity and see which car will have an advantage - Kalina wins, it easily copes with the task, while the VAZ 2111 starts off with problems, and is about to stall at the start. It's worth thinking about this fact.
Let's check our heroes on the road. How will they behave in extreme situations? Go! In third gear you can accelerate from 30 km/h. Acceleration dynamics are good, the only thing is that the sound of the engine at high speeds is heard more loudly than usual. At high speed our
Kalina feels more confident than the VAZ 2111, having accelerated to 130 km/h, the car is quite controllable, adequate and maneuverable in turns, goes softly and smoothly, gently bouncing on bumps.
The gearbox did not let us down, the transmission of the handle was well selected, was easy to control and did not bother us on the road. VAZ manufacturers promise us a speed of 179 km/h - not bad! But we will not recommend you to use such a speed, for your own safety.
At the factory, the car is equipped with Belshina tires. In winter, the car quickly throws in different directions, so it is recommended to change them to Dunlop winter tires, Cordiant Polar with studs (slightly noisy) or Amtel tires, which are quiet, have good and confident traction.
