Replacing the steering gear on a VAZ 2106 car

The steering gearbox is an important part of every vehicle. Thanks to this device, the wheels are adjusted. Being a worm-type mechanism, the steering gear has a large margin of safety. However, like any other mechanical device, it is subject to wear and tear. Therefore, there is a need to change it periodically.

Failure of the steering mechanism

When the gearbox finally fails, the ability to drive the vehicle is completely or significantly lost. How to timely determine the “quick end” of the steering mechanism of a VAZ 2106 car, so as not to encounter this at the most inopportune moment? There are several “warning lights” that indicate that the mechanism in question needs replacement.

ProblemCauses and consequences
1. Extraneous squeaks are heard when turning the steering wheelThis may indicate that a foreign substance of an abrasive type has entered the gearbox, or an internal breakage of the worm or gear. Possible jamming of the unit, loss of control over vehicle control functions
2. Significant play in the steering wheelIn most cases, play is caused by loosening the adjustment bolt and is eliminated by tightening it. If such a measure does not produce results, therefore, the gearbox of the VAZ 2106 car must be replaced
3. Oil leakThis may mean either a rupture of the sealing gasket or a crack or hole in the housing. This is fraught with high oil consumption, insufficient lubrication of the steering mechanism and acceleration of its inevitable failure.
4. Difficulty turning the steering wheelThe reason is insufficient lubrication, displacement of the engagement angle of the worm and gears, partial jamming of moving parts and mechanisms. It is fraught with increased driver fatigue during a long trip, complete jamming of the unit, loss of control over vehicle control functions
5. Knocks and vibrations in the gearbox, which are felt through the steering wheelThe reasons may be: a loose adjustment bolt, failure of sealing couplings and gaskets, or wear and tear of mechanisms moving in mesh. Possible jamming of the unit, loss of control over vehicle control functions

Replacing a vehicle gearbox is not a particularly difficult task, but this does not mean that it does not require careful preliminary preparation. First of all, you need to decide on the tools that will be used for the removal: which ones are available and which ones need to be prepared or purchased.

In order to replace the steering mechanism on a VAZ 2106 car, you need to acquire a set of wrenches, pliers, pliers, and a device for pressing out the pins of ball joints. Without the latter, the replacement process will become quite noticeably more complicated, which may affect the quality of the work performed. Therefore, you should not save at the expense of your own safety and comfort.

Because due to poor installation of the control mechanisms of the VAZ 2106 car, they can fail at the most inopportune moment, which will expose the lives of the driver, passengers and other road users to unreasonable danger. Next, it is necessary to carry out a superficial inspection of the gearbox housing for damage and assess the external condition.

It is located in the engine compartment, under the main brake cylinder of the car. In case of significant contamination, it is advisable to clean it from dust, dirt and oil stains. This will increase the speed and convenience of replacement work.

Removing and replacing the steering gear

Activities that are necessary to replace the steering mechanism of a vehicle:

  1. Removing the steering wheel.
  2. Disconnecting the steering shaft.
  3. The middle and left side tie rods are disconnected from the bipod and moved to the sides.
  4. Next, using two wrenches, unscrew 3 bolts that secure the steering gear to the car body. Before performing this procedure, it is necessary to remove the left fender liner.
  5. After unscrewing the nuts, you need to remove the bolts. This should be done carefully so as not to lose washers and gaskets, the main purpose of which is to adjust the ratio of the two shafts.
  6. The gaskets are removed (their locations must be marked, since they will be placed back when installing a new steering gear).
  7. The gearbox is carefully lowered and should hang on the machine body.
  8. Afterwards, through the top of the hood, the steering gear is removed.

The removed steering mechanism of the VAZ 2106 car must be completely cleaned of dirt. Work is also being carried out to clean the gearbox mounting area. If necessary, work is carried out to defect a section of the body if traces of corrosion or mechanical damage are detected.

It is unacceptable to ignore any, even insignificant in your opinion, problem with the mounting location of the steering gear, since in the future this may negate the work expended now. It is not recommended to leave damaged and suspicious areas of the body without proper care.

Installation of the steering gear is performed in the reverse order. However, in order for the replacement to take place correctly, during assembly work you must adhere to the following recommendations:

  1. When screwing in bolts and nuts, do not immediately tighten them.
  2. After completing the process of installing fasteners, you need to get behind the wheel and turn it to the right, and then to the left a few turns. Thanks to this action, automatic adjustment occurs - all parts and elements are finally adjusted to their seats.
  3. After performing the manipulations described above, it is necessary to finally tighten all bolted connections and reinstall all additionally removed parts and elements in the reverse order.

When the adjustment is completed, it is recommended to check the amount of lubricating fluid inside the crankcase. If the quantity there is not enough, you need to add oil to the required level.

If at some point the car cannot turn in the right direction, then it cannot be called safe. This applies to all cars, and the VAZ 2106 is no exception. The steering system of the “six” is characterized by increased complexity. The heart of the system is the steering gear, which, like any other device, becomes unusable over time. Fortunately, a car enthusiast can easily change it himself. Let's figure out how this is done.

How to replace the steering gear, also known as the steering mechanism, on a VAZ 2101, VAZ 2102, VAZ 2103, VAZ 2106?

Note! Before starting the operation, remove the front driver's wheel from the car!

Removal: 1) First you will need to remove the steering shaft from the car. (For information on how to remove the steering shaft, read the article: “Replacing the shaft”)

2) Next, disconnect the middle and left side tie rods from the bipod, and after disconnecting, move both rods to the side. (For information on how to disconnect both rods, see the article: “Replacing steering rods on a VAZ”)

Note! You can watch another interesting way to disconnect rods in the video clip located at the very end of the article! (For disconnecting the rods or, as they say, knocking them out, see “0:00 to 5:10 min”)

3) Now take a wrench in your hands and, at the bottom of the car, use it to unscrew all the nuts of the bolts that secure the steering gear to the car body. (The operation is performed with the fender liners removed, so remove them if they are installed on your car)

Note! Unscrew the nuts carefully and use two wrenches, one of which will hold the bolt itself from turning, and with the other, unscrew the nuts themselves. There are washers underneath all of these nuts, so be careful not to lose them!

4) When the nuts are unscrewed, holding the steering mechanism itself with your hand, remove all the bolts and remove all the nuts, and then try to release the steering gear as it will hang on the car body.

Note! Adjusting shims can also be installed on the bolts, thanks to which the ratio of the two shafts is set, so if you have these shims, then be sure to mark them and when installing a new shaft, install them in the same places where they were before!

5) Then stand up and then move into the engine compartment of the car, and there remove the steering mechanism by grasping it with your hand and pulling it upward towards you.

Installation: 1) Installation of the new steering shaft is carried out in the reverse order of removal, but in order for the installation of the new shaft to be successful, you need to know a few things:

  1. When you tighten all the bolts and nuts, do not tighten them all the way, just screw them on and that’s it.
  2. After this, get into the car and turn the steering wheel first to the right by 2-3 turns, and then by the same amount to the left, thanks to which the shaft and the mechanism itself will take the correct position.
  3. But after the operations have been completed, tighten all the bolts and nuts until they stop and then install all the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.

The design and principle of operation of the VAZ 2106 steering mechanism

The design of the VAZ 2106 steering mechanism is very complex. However, it is precisely this that allows the driver to confidently control the car in a variety of situations. All elements of the control system are shown in the figure below.

Here it should be said about the ease of control of the “six”. To turn the steering wheel, the driver makes a minimum of effort. And therefore, less tired on long trips. The steering of the “six” also has one more feature: play. It is very minor and is not a sign of a problem with the steering system. Play in the “six” steering wheel is a common occurrence; it occurs due to the abundance of various rods and small elements in the control system. Finally, in the latest models of the “sixes” they began to install injury-proof steering columns, which could fold in the event of a strong impact, increasing the driver’s chances of surviving a serious accident. The VAZ 2106 steering mechanism works as follows:

  1. The driver turns the steering wheel in the desired direction.
  2. A worm shaft begins to move in the steering gear, driven by a system of hinges.
  3. The gear mated to the worm shaft also begins to rotate and moves the double-ridge roller.
  4. Under the action of the roller, the secondary shaft of the steering gear begins to rotate.
  5. The bipod is attached to this shaft. When moving, they set the main steering rods in motion. Through these parts, the driver’s force is transmitted to the front wheels, which rotate to the required angle.

Steering VAZ 2106

Rack and pinion steering

The main task of the column is to transfer the rotational movement made by the steering wheel to the front wheels. All cars in the classic series have almost identical mechanisms. So, for the VAZ 2106 the gearbox from the VAZ 2101 is ideal. It is attached to the body with three bolts. In its upper cover there is a bolt with which the VAZ steering column is adjusted in the event of large play in the steering wheel.

Between the steering wheel and the gearbox there is a shaft made of a single piece of metal. It is attached using slots. Moreover, on the steering wheel side there are external splines on the shaft, and on the other side there are internal splines. If you are replacing the steering column on a VAZ 2106, you can slightly modernize the system by installing a shaft with two cardans, which are necessary to increase safety. This shaft has needle bearings, thanks to which the steering wheel will not be so tight.

If the steering column of a VAZ is being adjusted, then no unnecessary manipulations are necessary. Another thing is replacing the steering rods, of which there are three on the VAZ 2106: two outer ones and one middle one. Most often the extreme ones fail. Their repair is impossible, only replacement of tips is allowed.

After repairing the steering column, be sure to perform a wheel alignment. It is difficult to install wheels at the correct angle in a garage; it is advisable to carry out the adjustment on a special stand.

Purpose of the VAZ 2106 steering gear

The steering gearbox is an integral part of the “six” control system. And its purpose is to ensure timely rotation of the steering wheels in the direction desired by the driver.

Thanks to the steering gearbox, the effort that the driver spends turning the front wheels is significantly reduced. And finally, the gearbox allows you to reduce the number of steering wheel revolutions several times, which significantly improves the vehicle's handling.

Steering gear design

All elements of the steering gear are housed in a sealed steel case, which is produced by casting. The main parts of the gearbox are the gear and the so-called worm. These parts are in constant engagement. The housing also contains a bipod shaft with bushings, several ball bearings and springs. There are also several seals and gaskets that prevent oil from leaking out of the housing. You can learn more about the details of the “six” gearbox by looking at the figure.

Signs of breakdown of the gearbox and other elements of the steering system

The steering gearbox on a VAZ 2106 very rarely fails alone. As a rule, a gearbox failure is preceded by the failure of several elements of the steering system, after which the gearbox itself breaks down. That is why it is better to consider the problems of this system as a whole. We list the most well-known signs of a breakdown of the control system on the “six”:

  • when turning the steering wheel, a characteristic grinding or loud creaking sound is heard from under the steering column;
  • the driver observes a constant leak of lubricant from the gearbox;
  • turning the steering wheel began to require more effort than before.

Now let’s look at what exactly can cause the above symptoms and how to eliminate them.

Steering system noise

Here are the main causes of noise behind the steering column:

  • The clearance on the bearings installed in the steering wheel hubs has increased. Solution: adjust the gap, and in case of significant wear of the bearings, replace them completely;
  • The fastening nuts on the steering rod pins have become loose. It is these nuts that usually cause loud squeaking and grinding noises. Solution: tighten the nuts;
  • The gap between the bushings and the pendulum arm of the steering system has increased. Solution: replacing the bushings (and sometimes you have to change the bushing brackets if they are very worn);
  • The worm bearings in the gearbox are worn out. A grinding noise when turning wheels can also occur due to them. Solution: replace the bearings. And if the bearings are not worn out, it is necessary to adjust their clearances;
  • loosening the fastening nuts on the swing arms. Solution: tighten the nuts after placing the car wheels straight.

Leakage of lubricant from the gearbox

A lubricant leak indicates a violation of the seal of the device.

Here's how it happens:

  • The seals on the bipod shaft or on the worm shaft are completely worn out. Solution: replace the seals (sets of these seals can be purchased at any spare parts store);
  • The bolts holding the steering system housing cover have become loose. Solution: tighten the bolts, and they must be tightened crosswise. That is, first the right bolt is tightened, then the left, then the top bolt, then the bottom, etc. Only such a tightening pattern can guarantee the tightness of the crankcase cover;
  • damage to the sealing gasket under the crankcase cover. If the above tightening pattern does not lead to anything, it means that the seal under the crankcase cover has worn out. Therefore, the cover will have to be removed and the sealing gasket replaced.

The steering wheel turns hard

If the driver feels that it has become very difficult to turn the steering wheel, this can happen for the following reasons:

  • Incorrect alignment of the steering wheels. The solution is obvious: install the car on a stand and set the correct toe and camber angles;
  • one or more parts of the steering system are deformed. Steering rods are usually deformed. And this happens due to external mechanical influences (flying stones, regular driving on uneven roads). Deformed rods will have to be removed and replaced with new ones;
  • the gap between the worm and the roller in the steering gear has increased (or vice versa, decreased). Over time, any mechanical connection can become loose. And worm joints are no exception. To eliminate the problem, the roller gap is adjusted using a special bolt, then the gap size is checked using a feeler gauge. The resulting figure is checked against the figure specified in the operating instructions for the machine;
  • The nut on the swing arm is too tight. The peculiarity of this nut is that over time it does not weaken, like other fasteners, but rather tightens. This occurs due to the specific operating conditions of the pendulum arm. The solution is obvious: the nut should be slightly loosened.

Steering column VAZ 2106

The main purpose of the steering column is to transmit rotational motion from the steering wheel to the front wheels. All “classics” use structurally identical components. The mechanism is attached to the left side member with three bolts. There is a bolt on the top cover with which the gap between the roller and the worm is adjusted. The need to set the gap arises when a large backlash appears in the mechanism. The gearbox and steering wheel are connected to each other through an intermediate shaft, which is mounted on splines that prevent it from turning.

Steering column device

The steering gear housing has a worm shaft mounted on two bearings that do not have an inner race. Instead of an inner ring, special grooves are used at the ends of the worm. The required clearance in the bearings is set using spacers, which are located under the bottom cover. The exit of the worm shaft from the housing is sealed with a cuff. On the side of the spline connection on the shaft there is a recess for a bolt connecting the gearbox shaft to the shaft from the steering wheel. The worm is engaged with a special roller located on the axis and rotating with the help of a bearing. The bipod shaft at the exit from the body is also sealed with a cuff. A bipod is mounted on it in a certain position.

On the sixth model Zhiguli, the steering mechanism works in the following order:

  1. The driver turns the steering wheel.
  2. The force is transmitted through the shaft to the worm element, which reduces the number of revolutions.
  3. When the worm rotates, a double-ridge roller moves.
  4. A lever is installed on the bipod shaft, through which the steering rods are activated.
  5. The steering linkage acts on the steering knuckles, which turn the front wheels in the desired direction and at the required angle.

Steering column problems

The appearance of problems in the steering mechanism can be judged by characteristic signs:

If any of the listed defects appear, repairs should not be delayed.

Creaks in the column

The appearance of squeaks can be caused by the following reasons:

  • Excessive play in the hub bearings. To fix the problem, it is necessary to adjust the gap or replace the bearings;
  • The tie rod pins have become loose. The way out of the situation is to tighten the nuts;
  • large play between the pendulum and bushings. The malfunction is eliminated by replacing the bushings;
  • wear of the worm shaft bearings can manifest itself in the form of squeaks when turning the wheels. To solve the problem, adjust the clearance in the bearings or replace them;
  • The fastening of the swing arms has become loose. The way out of the situation is to tighten the nuts when setting the wheels straight.

Oil leak

Leakage of lubricant from the steering column on a “classic” is a fairly common occurrence. This is due to the following:

  • damage (wear) of the oil seal on the shaft of the bipod or worm. The problem is solved by replacing the cuffs;
  • loosening the bolts securing the crankcase cover. To eliminate leaks, tighten the bolts diagonally, which ensures the tightness of the connection;
  • damage to the seal under the crankcase cover. The cover will need to be removed and the gasket replaced.

Stiff steering wheel rotation

There may be several reasons why the steering wheel turns slowly:

  • Incorrect alignment of the front wheels. To fix the problem, you will have to visit a service station and carry out adjustment work;
  • deformation of any part in the steering. Steering rods are usually subject to deformation, which is due to their low location and mechanical stress, for example, when hitting an obstacle. Curved rods must be replaced;
  • Incorrect clearance between roller and worm. The required gap is set with a special bolt;
  • tightly tighten the nut on the pendulum. The way out of the situation is to slightly loosen the fasteners.

Steering column repair

Repairing a gearbox, like any other unit, requires preparing tools and following step-by-step instructions.

Dismantling

Tools you will need:

  • 17 and 30 mm head;
  • long and powerful knob;
  • mount;
  • hammer;
  • ratchet handle;
  • regular open-end wrench 17.

The procedure for removing a node consists of the following steps:

    We unscrew the bolt securing the shaft and steering column.

How to disassemble

The mechanism is disassembled for the purpose of troubleshooting parts and subsequent repairs. Tools you will need:

  • large socket head 30 mm;
  • 14 mm wrench or socket;
  • puller for gearbox bipods;
  • flat screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • vice.

The procedure consists of the following steps:

    We use a wrench to unscrew the nut that secures the bipod to the shaft, and then clamp the gearbox in a vice.

Unit repair

To troubleshoot parts, they are washed in diesel fuel or kerosene. After this, check the condition of the worm shaft and roller. They must not have any damage. The rotation of the ball bearings of the assembly must be free and without jamming. The structural elements of the bearings must be in good condition, i.e., be free of signs of wear, potholes and other defects. The presence of cracks in the gearbox housing is unacceptable. If parts with wear are identified, they are replaced with serviceable elements. The cuffs are changed during any repair work on the column.

How to change the steering gearbox on a VAZ 2106

Owners of the VAZ 2106 believe that the steering gearboxes of the “sixes” are almost beyond repair. An exception is made only in case of wear of ball bearings, gaskets and seals. Then the car owner disassembles the gearbox and replaces the above parts with new ones. And in case of wear of a worm, gear or roller, there is only one solution: replace the entire gearbox, since it is not always possible to find on sale, for example, a worm shaft from a “six” gearbox or a gear. The reason is simple: the car was discontinued a long time ago and spare parts for it are becoming less and less every year. To remove the gearbox we need the following tools:

  • set of socket heads and wrenches;
  • special puller for steering rod;
  • set of spanners;
  • new steering gear;
  • rags.

Sequencing

Having prepared everything necessary, the car should be driven onto an overpass (or into a viewing hole). The wheels of the machine should be securely secured with shoes.

  1. The left front wheel of the car is lifted with a jack and removed. Access to steering rods is provided.
  2. Using a rag, the fingers on the steering rods are thoroughly cleaned of dirt.
  3. The rods are disconnected from the gear bipods. To do this, remove the fastening cotter pins on the rods, then unscrew the nuts with a spanner. After this, using a puller, the rod fingers are squeezed out of the steering bipod.

Pendulum VAZ 2106

A pendulum arm or simply a pendulum is a part that connects the steering rods and the steering gearbox. The product is located under the hood symmetrically to the steering gear and is mounted on the right side member.

Replacing the pendulum

Like other parts of the car, the swingarm is subject to wear and tear and sometimes requires repair or replacement. The following characteristic signs indicate that problems have arisen:

  • when driving on uneven roads, knocking noises are heard;
  • large play in the steering wheel.

When the pendulum breaks down, sometimes you have to exert a lot of force to rotate the steering wheel.

It should be taken into account that the listed symptoms can appear not only when there is a problem with the pendulum arm, but also when the assembly is loosely tightened or the adjusting nut is overtightened.

How to remove

For dismantling you will need:

  • a set of open-end or ring wrenches;
  • ball pin remover.

We perform the procedure in the following sequence:

  1. Remove the right front wheel.
  2. We unscrew the fastening of the rod fingers to the pendulum lever.

Pendulum repair

Repair of the unit comes down to replacing bushings or bearings (depending on the design).

Replacing bushings

Repairs are carried out using the following tools:

  • 19 mm wrench;
  • vice;
  • new bushings;
  • lubricant "Litol-24".

The repair sequence is as follows:

    We clamp the pendulum in a vice. We take out the cotter pin and unscrew the fasteners.

Troubleshooting and assembly

After disassembling the pendulum, we check the condition of all parts. There should be no defects on the axle and lever (traces of wear, deformation). With high mileage of the car, bushings are subject to wear. Therefore, they have to be replaced with new ones. There should be no cracks or other damage on the bracket. The pendulum is assembled in the reverse order, with Litol-24 applied to the pendulum axis and the hole under it. The adjusting nut should be tightened so that the bipod rotates when a force of 1-2 kg is applied to its end. A dynamometer is used to determine the force.

Video: replacing the pendulum arm bushings on a “classic”

Replacing bearings

With high mileage of the car, the bearings in the pendulum begin to bite and jam, which requires their replacement. The tools you will need are the same as in the previous case, only instead of bushings you need bearings. Repair consists of the following steps:

    We clamp the part in a vice and unscrew the adjusting nut, but not completely.

When assembling the pendulum, the bearings are pressed so that rotation is free, but without play.

How to disassemble the steering gear of the “six”

If the driver decides not to change the gearbox on his “six”, but only replace the seals or bearings in it, then the gearbox will have to be almost completely disassembled. To do this, you need the following things:

  • large socket head 30;
  • puller for gearbox bipods;
  • flat screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • vice.

Sequence of work

It should be said right away that a puller and a vice are the main tools when disassembling the gearbox. It is better not to start disassembling without them, since it will not be possible to replace these tools with anything.

    There is a fastening nut on the gearbox bipod. It is unscrewed with an open-end wrench. After this, the gearbox is installed in a vice, a puller is put on the bipod as shown in the photo, and the rod is carefully moved from the shaft with the puller.

Adjusting the steering column play

The need for adjustment arises after repair of the unit or when large play appears when turning the steering wheel. If the mechanism has a large free play, the wheels lag somewhat behind the movement of the steering wheel. To make the adjustment you will need:

  • flat screwdriver;
  • 19 mm wrench.

We align the steering wheel in the center, and then perform the following actions:

    Using a 19 mm wrench, unscrew the nut located on top of the steering gearbox.

Video: adjusting the steering column play on a “classic”

How to adjust the steering gear

Adjustment of the steering gear may be necessary if the steering wheel becomes very difficult to turn or a slight sticking is clearly felt when turning the steering wheel. Adjustment is carried out using a 19-mm open-end wrench and a flat-head screwdriver. In addition, for precise adjustments you will definitely need the help of a partner.

  1. The car is installed on smooth asphalt. The steering wheels are installed straight.
  2. The hood is opened, the steering gear is cleaned of dirt with a piece of rags. There is an adjusting screw with a lock nut on the crankcase cover of the gearbox. This screw is covered with a plastic cap, which will need to be pryed off with a screwdriver and removed.

Video: how to adjust the classic steering gear

How to reduce backlash?

The gearbox does not require special care during operation; the main thing is to prevent oil leakage and maintain its level at normal levels. If play appears in the gearbox, the wheels turn only after the steering wheel reaches a certain angle of rotation. This creates inconvenience in driving a VAZ 2106.

You can reduce the backlash yourself; for this you will need an assistant, a 19-mm wrench and a flat-head screwdriver:

  • Unscrew the nut on the adjusting bolt;
  • Have an assistant turn the steering wheel a quarter turn in both directions;
  • At the same time, screw in the screw until you are sure that the play has disappeared;
  • Tighten the nut firmly.

After these manipulations, the steering movement will become tighter.

Filling oil into the steering gear

As mentioned above, the steering gear housing is sealed. Oil is poured inside, which can significantly reduce friction of parts. Any GL5 or GL4 class oil is suitable for a VAZ gearbox. The viscosity class should be SAE80-W90. Many owners of “sixes” fill in the old Soviet TAD17 oil, which also has an acceptable viscosity and is cheaper. To fill the gearbox completely, you will need 0.22 liters of gear oil.

How to check the oil level in the steering gear

In order for the steering gear parts to last as long as possible, the driver must periodically monitor the oil level in this device and, if necessary, add lubricant.

    The gearbox cover has a hole for filling oil, closed with a plug. The plug is unscrewed using an 8-mm open-end wrench.

Oil filling sequence

If the driver needs to add a little oil to the gearbox or change the oil completely, he will need an empty plastic bottle, a piece of plastic tube and a medical syringe of the largest volume. It should be noted here that the operating instructions for the machine say: the oil in the steering gear should be changed once a year.

    The oil plug on the gearbox cover is unscrewed. A plastic tube is placed over the syringe. The other end of the tube is inserted into the drain hole of the gearbox, the oil is drawn out into a syringe and poured into an empty plastic bottle.

Video: we change the oil in the steering gear of a “classic” ourselves

So, the steering gearbox on the “six” is a very important part. Not only the controllability of the car, but also the safety of the driver and passengers depends on its condition. Even a novice car enthusiast can replace the gearbox. No special skills or knowledge are required for this. You just need to know how to use wrenches and strictly follow the recommendations outlined above.

Steering gear and swing arm

Removing and installing the steering mechanism

For this operation you will need the following tools: a special puller, 13 mm, 17 mm, 22 mm keys and pliers.

1. Disconnect the steering shaft from the steering gear (see “Removing and installing the steering shaft”).

2. Disconnect the steering rods (1) and (2) from the steering gear bipod and move them to the side (see “Removing and installing the rods”).

3. While holding the fastening bolts (indicated in the photo by arrows) of the steering gearbox from turning, unscrew the nuts securing them.

4. Remove the steering gear along with the bolts and adjusting washers through the bottom of the car.

Note Mark the location and number of shims to ensure they are reinstalled.

5. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.

Note Before final tightening of the steering gearbox mounting bolts, it is necessary to turn the steering wheel in both directions several times so that the steering shaft and gearbox self-align (take the correct position).

Removing and installing the pendulum arm

For this operation you will need the following tools: a special puller, two 17 mm keys and pliers.

1. Disconnect the steering rods (1) and (2) from the pendulum arm and move them to the side (see “Removing and installing the rods”).

↑ Adjusting the gearbox engagement

  • Remove the protective cap from the adjusting screw. Using a 17mm wrench, loosen the nut so that you can lift the lock washer.
  • We quickly turn the steering wheel left and right several times at an angle of about 10° and at the same time use a slotted screwdriver to tighten (unscrew) the adjusting screw until the free play and forces on the steering wheel are within acceptable limits. It is not recommended to over-tighten the screw.

After adjustment, tighten the nut, holding the adjusting screw with a screwdriver from turning.

↑ How to remove steering play on a VAZ 2106

If axial play of the pendulum arm axis is detected, then tighten the nut on the top of the axle. To do this, in the engine compartment, remove the cotter pin from the castle nut, use a 19-point socket wrench to turn it 60° (one edge) and check the play again.

If the play does not disappear, then tighten the nut again and install the cotter pin. If, after tightening the nut, the force required to turn the steering wheel increases significantly, then we repair the pendulum arm.
