It just so happened that there were a lot of complaints about AMT. Like, the driver and passengers nod when switching, the car becomes dull, and so on. The VAZ team listened and even offered several new firmwares, but the global update was announced only now.
No fundamental changes to the actuators were required. However, there are still innovations in the hardware - the control controller now has not one, but two boards, and, of course, a different transmission control program. So owners of robotic cars will not be able to simply come to the dealer and reflash the box.
What did they change?
The “traffic” mode, or, as it is officially called, the Creeping mode function, which appeared this year, has been retained. The driver simply takes his foot off the brake pedal and the car begins to roll forward. The speed in first gear is 7–8 km/h, in second gear it is 14–15 km/h. When you engage reverse, this mode also works - the car crawls at a speed of 5–6 km/h.
In this case, the Creeping mode function is turned off automatically under one of three conditions: if you open the driver's door while driving, if you move the selector to neutral or tighten the parking brake handle. That is, suddenly the car won’t move on its own.
The new AMT control program has reduced the gear shift time: from first to second and from second to third - by as much as 30%. They promise that the synchronizers will hold up.

Operating modes of the automated box
While driving, the driver can set the gear shift lever to automatic or semi-automatic mode. In the first case, the transmission operates by relying on sensor readings and impulses from the electronic control unit. As for the semi-automatic mode, “Tiptronic” is activated here, which can be found on Mercedes cars with their automatic transmission. There is a plus/minus switch on the gear lever.
Some cars have steering wheel paddle shifters. Thus, the AMT gearbox no longer receives signals from the sensors, but responds to the driver's instructions. Some people call this mode sport mode. The switching speed here is the same as in automatic mode. But here you can select the speed at which the reduced or increased speed will be activated.
Is it fair to install AMT robot in X-Ray
If you want to buy a car with a robotic gearbox, regardless of the make and model, but in the middle price category, you should pay attention to the operational features of the above-mentioned unit. A striking example would be the Lada X-Ray with the latest generation robot from similar automatic transmissions.
The combination of technology with the simplicity of a car raises a lot of questions among the average consumer. If you understand them gradually, you can understand all the advantages, and come to terms with some of the disadvantages. Thus, a review of the X-ray fret will help you understand how effective the AMT robotic gearbox is, as well as in what driving modes it does not cause discomfort when switching.
In the video below you will find answers to the following questions:
- How to change gear if the car was turned off in neutral.
- How the X-Ray robot reacts to sharp gas when changing lanes.
- How the elongated main pair is displayed on the dynamics (how the gear ratios are selected, in comparison with Renault gearboxes).
- Can AMT be heard in the cabin (a huge difference from the Granta).
- Lever position when using manual shift mode.
Driving performance test
Considering that the car has a fairly powerful engine, it provides good dynamic performance in the city. In this case, even the AMT robot plays to the driver's advantage. When overtaking, the gear is pulled out for as long as possible, which allows you to safely complete the maneuver. When moving downhill, the “speed” always remains on, which is convenient for subsequent continuation of movement.
In the manual mode of using the box, completely different sensations are achieved, making it possible to understand when to release the gas to switch. In any mode of the box, the “prompt” on the dashboard continues to work.
Considering the high-torque power of the 1.8-liter engine, you can drive within one gear, which will be comfortable for overtaking and driving in traffic. A visual comparison in the realities of a busy road gives an overall impression of how the AMT robot on X-Ray, and the entire machine as a whole, works.
For a more detailed test of the “box – car” connection, see the video below. Let's drive around the city, check the operating modes of the gearbox, how much the 1.8 engine installed under the hood of the domestic crossover is enough for it. The author will share his emotions from using a car with a similar robot in city mode. What you don't like and what you have to put up with in everyday use.
Video test drive of the AMT box on X-Ray:
Characteristic
This unit is a manual gearbox. But the gear shift here occurs automatically. The selection of the desired gear is made by the electronic control unit. The ECU reacts to sensor signals and generates a return pulse.
As a result, the car moves in the most optimal speed mode. This transmission (AMT) combines the efficiency of a manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic transmission. Now such gearboxes are installed on Skoda, Audi and Volkswagen cars.
About the design
What does an AMT gearbox consist of? This transmission includes several components:
- Drive and clutch discs.
- Gear shift lever.
- Electronic control system.
Any robot uses a double friction clutch. On conventional mechanics, one disk is used. This design allows for faster gear shifting on AMT. The Lada Vesta, on which robotic gearboxes began to be installed, is much faster than its manual counterpart. And this despite the fact that the AMT does not have a clutch pedal as such. But not only the Volkswagen-Audi concern and AvtoVAZ use such a box.
