The new product of the domestic automobile industry, Lada XRay, has been rolling off the concern’s assembly line for almost a year now and is being tested by car enthusiasts in real conditions on Russian roads.

Those who are just planning to purchase a car and choose a model for themselves, at the first stages of selection are interested in parameters that are known without testing, in particular, dimensions and other geometric characteristics, since knowledge of these parameters allows one to assess how well X Rey’s overall dimensions correspond to the class machine and engine power.

Lada XRay is created on the Renault Sandero Stepway platform, but with a slightly larger base.

This is explained by the large size of the Renault mirrors, while the Lada XRay mirrors are disproportionately small in relation to the dimensions of the body, as a result of which they do not provide the best visibility.

    The height of the Lada XRay is quite significant - the car without roof rails is only 2 cm lower than the Renault Sandero Stepway with roof rails, but this is compensated by the larger base and width of the X Ray.

    Trunk dimensions

    The standard luggage compartment of the Lada X Ray, at first glance, is too small for a crossover - this impression is supported by the size of the luggage opening, which is also narrowed in the upper half:

    • opening height –80.0 cm;
    • opening width – 99.0 cm.

    However, the trunk volume in the standard configuration is 361 liters, and the internal dimensions are:

    • length – 79.0 cm;
    • width – 90.0 cm;
    • height (up to removable shelf) – 40.0 cm.

    Folding the rear seat backs allows you to increase the volume of the luggage compartment to 1200 liters, and the length to 1700 mm. The diagonal length of the trunk will be 1850 mm. An additional folded front passenger seat will increase the volume of the luggage compartment to 1300 liters, and the large diagonal to 2500 mm.

    The front seat cushions are located at a height of 180 mm from the floor, the rear sofa – 260 mm. The distance between the backs of the front and rear seats is from 600 to 815 mm.

But Xray Cross is not cheap even with front-wheel drive. Although even for that kind of money, the new AvtoVAZ product is more profitable than its classmates. Competitors are either more expensive or worse equipped, and more often than not, both. Not counting the body kit made of unpainted plastic, the “base” already has 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, a double-barreled stainless steel muffler, LED running lights, an alarm system with central locking and rear disc brakes - by the way, they are here from “ Vesta." Even the new tires are not budget-friendly: the 215/50R17 all-season Continental, welded to AvtoVAZ’s special order, is wider and taller than that of the Vesta Cross. It also lies in the trunk as a full-size spare wheel, and on the original alloy wheel.

    Contrasting brown inserts in the interior can be replaced with less intrusive gray ones.

    The rear sofa cushion was moved back to the trunk by 2.5 cm - this modification, which made it possible to add legroom, was also received by the regular Xray.

    High-profile tires added 5 mm to the hatchback's 195 mm ground clearance, and another 15 mm was gained due to new springs and shock absorbers. Moreover, they cannot be installed so easily on a regular Xray - you will have to change the front arms and CV joints. But we strongly do not recommend doing this, since it is unknown how such a car will drive. After all, the Xray Cross chassis was tuned not only for the new suspension, but also for the new electric power steering, installed instead of the electro-hydraulic one, which made it possible to reduce the gear ratio in the rack: from lock to lock, the steering wheel now makes less than three turns.

    — When creating the Cross, 170 new components were introduced into the Lada Xray design, and the list of changes itself is even longer! — Oleg Grunenkov, director of the Lada Xray Cross project, who went with us to Kazakhstan for the first test drive of the new product, was clearly proud of the work done.

    Indeed, the list of improvements turned out to be large, and not all ideas were realized. Thus, although sound insulation has been improved, it is only on the wheel arches and sills: sandblasting is now inaudible, but the noise of the engine and tires quietly penetrates the interior. Although AvtoVAZ heard our complaint. But something remained unrealized due to the design features of the model. For example, no matter how hard you try, you won’t be able to make the car more spacious without increasing the wheelbase: new front seats with a deep recess for the knees, as well as a rear sofa moved closer to the trunk and slightly lowered down, only partially solved the problem of cramped conditions in the back row. With a height of 186 cm, I fit behind myself, although without any reserve in my legs. But now there are heated seats and a USB charging port - not every higher-class model can find this.

    The trunk has a double bottom. Underneath is a full-size spare wheel on a cast wheel.

    The driver’s seat has also become more comfortable: a central armrest has finally appeared, and the steering wheel has been adjusted for reach (for the first time among models on the B0 chassis!) and heated. Other innovations include heated front seats with three degrees of “roasting”, the buttons of which have moved from the side of the seat to the center console, and now it is clear in which mode it operates. There is also a button to turn on the heated windshield and the main feature of the new product - the regulator of the Lada Ride Select system, thanks to which the Xray behaves completely differently both on paved roads and off-road.

    The standard tire sizes are 195/65 R15 or 205/55 R16, indicated in the technical specifications of the hatchback, and R is not the radius, but the radial design of the tire. All configurations of the Lada X-Ray, except for the most budget-friendly Optima, are equipped with 5-spoke alloy wheels that harmonize well with the exterior of the car.

    According to advanced X-Ray owners, tires of the following sizes can also be painlessly installed on the car: 185/55 R17, 195/50 R17, 205/50 R17, 225/45 R17, as well as 175/50 R18, 195/45 R18 , 215/40 R18, 225/40 R18 and even 175/45 R19, 185/40 R19, 195/40 R19.

    All electronics that provide ABS are configured for factory wheel sizes, so for safety reasons, after installing wheels of other sizes, it is necessary to flash the ABS/ESP control unit to a new tire size, and this operation is performed only at authorized dealers.

    The new model line differs from the previous version by the increased diameter of the wheel rims, higher ground clearance and plastic body protection.

    Having carefully studied the photo, you will notice that the model differs from its predecessor in small details. This is a slightly elevated body position and aggressive design style. The small front end appears more massive thanks to the high and wide hood and X-shaped radiator trim.

    Weaknesses x ray

    Today, when enough time has passed since the “birth” of the car, we can draw conclusions regarding expectations and reality. The first wave of test drives was picked up by automotive journalists, who subsequently began to echo statements from owners who became happy owners of production cars. So, the main disadvantages that were identified experimentally include:

    • Absence of any plastic trim on the fenders and sills. This, at first glance, insignificant detail can immediately disqualify the car from claiming the title of crossover, since all potentially dangerous off-road areas are simply painted. This suggests that meeting this car with poor road conditions will threaten the rapid loss of its original appearance, from which nothing protects the car.
    • The car is not maneuverable. Its lateral stability capabilities seem to hint that the car is simply not designed for this. When trying to turn into a corner at high speed, be prepared to feel the resistance of the car, in the form of a large roll.
    • There is no reach adjustment for the steering wheel. On the one hand, we are talking about a budget car, for which this omission is excusable, but this can be safely written down as a disadvantage, since this fact affects the convenience of driving.
    • Drum brakes are installed at the rear. Their installation is easily explained by the budget concept of the car, but car enthusiasts claim that they would be willing to pay extra in order to correct this misunderstanding. In fact, the drums are able to provide the necessary braking, which has been proven by various tests, but the opinion of car enthusiasts is adamant.
    • Controversial ABS. According to the manufacturers, its configuration exactly corresponds to the off-road conditions of Russian open spaces, but this concept does not always work. It is noted that its operating mode is more suitable for driving on hills (in this case, it is surprising that they did not add a diesel option).
    • There is no gas strut in the hood. A trifle, but unpleasant, especially considering the fact that 14 Lada models have it.
    • The body is a tinsmith's nightmare. Yes, beautiful, noble. In some places, it even smells like Cayenne, but that’s all before the first accident. When receiving dents that in any way touch the branded X, the owner can expect only one outcome - purchasing a new body part. There can be no talk of straightening, since even eminent craftsmen assure that complete restoration of the geometry of the tin is beyond their control.

    It is also necessary to add a few words about the salon. The following details are confusing:

    • Lack of armrest. For some drivers, this feature is by no means critical, but there are also those who cannot imagine driving without this functional component of the car’s interior. In addition, the armrest provides additional functional space, which is never superfluous in a car.
    • Oak plastic interior. This is rather the norm, since we should not forget about the budget of the car as a whole. Its “grainy” pattern does not add attractiveness, but also does not cause increased accumulation of dirt and dust.

    In addition to the above nuances, there are those that are quite realistic and within the power of every car enthusiast to change.
