MD tuning stands for throttle modernization. There are quite a few ways to modify the throttle assembly, but this article will discuss the most popular scheme proposed by the American engineer Ron Hutton. According to him, correct MD tuning can increase engine power and reduce fuel consumption by up to 25%.

How to adapt the gas pedal?

We carry out adaptation either after repair, replacement of the computer, or long-term removal of the battery.

  1. We connect the battery.
  2. We insert the key for the first time after installing the battery and turn it to the “ignition” position. The indicators on the panel light up, wait at least 30 seconds and start the engine. Important: the temperature of the air and the engine must be at least 7 degrees warmer, otherwise adaptation is useless, the engine will operate in emergency mode.
  3. Next, we adapt the ignition diagnostic function: we accelerate in second gear and brake with the engine at 4 thousand rpm. Up to 1 thousand rpm - we must perform this operation six times during one trip.

Adaptation of the diagnostic function is necessary to preserve the catalyst and possible fire.

The revs began to fluctuate a little when cold, and they stayed for a long time at 1300 rpm when warming up; in general, Largus’s favorite problem with the K4M began to appear.

This is my second Largus, on the first I wound up the fum tape, then under warranty they changed the receiver, installed a new one with the inscription RENAULT, but the rings are of course a weak point. I just file off the excess rubber and it becomes a little flat. We assemble this device from a canister cap, a bolt with a nut and two washers, a drill and a file clamped in a vice.

Adaptation of remote sensing for Volkswagen Golf 4:

  • We warm up the engine to t=80 0 C and turn off the car. Then we connect the USB-KKL cable to the diagnostic connector and, after turning on the ignition, launch the diagnostic program (VAG-COM 3.11).
  • We enter section 01-engine.
  • We poll the fault memory (02).
  • We erase detected faults (05).
  • After returning to the previous menu, enter the “adaptation-10” section.
  • On channel 00, press the “read” button.
  • Save the result and return to factory settings.

  • Turn on the ignition and wait at least 3 seconds.
  • Within 5 seconds, press the accelerator pedal five times, then wait 7 seconds.
  • Pressing the accelerator pedal, hold it until the CHECK stops flashing and lights up constantly (about 20 seconds are required).
  • After the CHECK light comes on continuously, you must release the pedal within 3 seconds.
  • We start the engine to run at XX.
  • Press the pedal several times to check the stability of the XX.

When should you not perform remote sensing adaptation?

It is worth noting that it is appropriate to carry out the above procedures using software and special diagnostic equipment in the event of a failure of the damper settings. It does not matter whether the electronic parameters are broken or the mechanical settings of the equipment are lost.

If the operation of the throttle is impaired due to wear, then it is more advisable to think about repairing or replacing the part. If suddenly, after the steps described above, adaptation does not occur, it is worth checking the motor responsible for opening/closing the damper. There may not be enough power for the node to operate properly.

For example, cleaning the damper body inside and outside before starting adaptation is necessary for any make of car.

The only difference is that in some cars the damper is adjusted using a cable, and in others using electronics. This difference will manifest itself in the choice of adaptation parameters.

What to do additionally

After modernization of this type, it is necessary to perform a number of additional manipulations:

  1. Rechip the ECU, since using a new part the old program will not work adequately. It will not be able to properly control the ratio of air and fuel in the mixture.
  2. Install a sports receiver. But before installation, be sure to consult with specialists or simply contact a car service center for help.
  3. Replace existing camshafts with more advanced ones.

Refining the throttle assembly is a serious procedure, there are a lot of different disputes regarding it, those who have tried such tuning in practice praise the result, but theorists swear. But the opinion of practitioners still prevails, and the fact that after modernization fuel is saved by 30% is already a proven fact.

Results after MD tuning

We decided to test the effectiveness of MD tuning. First we conducted an experiment on a machine with a cable. The verification consisted of the following stages:

  • Full filling of the gas tank;
  • Driving approximately 20 km;
  • The gas tank is full again, fuel consumption is 2.01 liters;
  • Performing MD tuning on a 46 mm throttle assembly;
  • Riding again 20 km;
  • The gas tank was full again, fuel consumption was 1.61 liters.

As you can see, the implementation of MD tuning made it possible to save approximately 20% of fuel. Low-end power has also increased.

Next, we decided to conduct the same experiment on a car with E-gas. In this case, the throttle upgrade saved approximately 9% of fuel. In addition, the response to the gas pedal has accelerated.

Cleaning algorithm

Now we will give a step-by-step algorithm for properly cleaning the throttle valve.

  • First of all, you need to get to the damper itself. The design is different in different engines. But as a rule, to do this you need to remove the air duct that runs from the damper to the air filter.
  • Dismantle the damper. To do this, unscrew several mounting bolts (2-4 pieces), and also disconnect the necessary connectors (for example, the connector from the absorber purge valve).
  • To clean, you must use a carburetor cleaner. There is a wide variety of them, and in auto stores you can easily find a product in accordance with your preferences and capabilities (we will talk about them later).
  • Using a rag and the mentioned product, you must thoroughly wipe the damper outside and inside.
  • You also need to clean the protective grille (if your car has one).
  • Assembly of the unit is carried out in the reverse order.

Our new engine remains “not plug-in” - the valves do not reach the pistons. When tested on a bench (the sensors were turned off), the result was not impressive.

All sensors, including the lambda probe, were connected in the latter case. We managed to get 96 “forces” at 5300 rpm!

How not to increase power!

  • Do not attempt to bore channels. This operation can be performed in the absence of ball cutters, but in garage conditions nothing will work even with cutters. The bottom line is that the accuracy of the cutter installation is important - the error should not exceed 1-2 microns.
  • As you can see, on the stock VAZ-2114 hatchback the increase in power was 24%, and this is without installing a “chandelier”, “improved exhaust” and other expensive elements.
  • There is no point in buying a “racing camshaft” without having the appropriate tuning firmware.

According to reviews, the problem with floating engine speeds is familiar to many Lada Largus owners. This is especially true in winter, when the car has difficulty starting when cold (starting the engine is difficult in the morning). In such situations, floating speeds only make the situation worse.

The tachometer needle may jump chaotically from 1000 to 1500 rpm or not reach the “warm-up” level at all, staying below the required idle speed values. Experts do not recommend self-diagnosis of the car.

Car engine modifications and their features

The reasons why the speed may fluctuate on Largus are due to differences in the technical characteristics of the engines. Depending on the configuration, an 8- or 16-valve engine is installed.

8-valve K7M 800

This engine model was borrowed from Renault Logan and Sandero. Such motors have been installed on Largus since 2010. The unit complies with the Euro-4 standard, its power is 83 hp. With. Among the disadvantages:

  • floating idle speed;
  • high fuel consumption;
  • lack of hydraulic compensators in the valve mechanism - the gaps need to be adjusted every 30,000 km;
  • the need to replace the timing belt every 60,000 km - a broken belt will inevitably lead to bending of the valves;
  • unreliability of crankshaft oil seals;
  • vibration and increased noise during operation of the power unit.

The 8-valve engine is too weak for Largus. Among the advantages are the unpretentiousness of the engine and its inexpensive maintenance.

16-valve K4M

This engine is used only in the top modifications of Largus in the “Lux” configuration. Engine power is 106 hp. s, but it still requires improvements. It differs from the previous unit:

  • absence of vibration and almost complete absence of noise;
  • low fuel consumption.

The disadvantage of the 16-valve engine can be considered its complex design, which leads to the high cost of the car. The engine life is about 450,000 km, but servicing the unit is more expensive. The main thing is not to use it often under increased loads and undergo maintenance on time.

Causes and methods of eliminating difficult engine starting

To successfully start the engine, the fuel mixture and a spark from the spark plugs must simultaneously appear in its cylinders.

The engine cannot be started if one or more elements are faulty. This happens, for example, when the starter does not spin the crankshaft.

If floating idle speeds have become too annoying, and it is no longer useful to turn the engine with the starter, it’s time to understand the causes of the malfunctions that have arisen. The table shows the most common reasons why the Lada Largus engine speed fluctuates and it may not start.
