Used cars: review of Lada Grants and VAZ-2114 and their pros and cons


My car is very dynamic, comfortable in the cabin. The exterior is very beautiful, as it has classic shapes without any biodesign. It's a shame that it's being discontinued. I am sure that this is not due to the obsolescence of the model. The world also knew cars that had been in production for much longer. Take the Niva or the Zhuk, for example. That’s why they say that it has become a competitor to Grants and Kalinas, with which all dealer sites in the country are filled to capacity. So I wrote a brief technical description of my car. I tried to be as similar as possible to a competent and clear expression of all the advantages. The Lada 2114 Super Auto is only superficially similar to the production car VAZ 2114. The Lada 2114 Super Auto has a 16-valve engine 21124 (the valves do not bend), fuel consumption in the urban cycle is 7 liters . The engine has an imported timing system, a lightweight cylinder-piston group, a MAN pump, the gas pedal has a cable drive, and a VALEO clutch with an increased disc diameter and increased pedal softness is installed. The leg doesn't get tired. Clutch service life is 150 thousand km. .The Lada 2114 Super Auto has a 2170 (Priora) gearbox. This gearbox is distinguished from serial ones by manual assembly, selection of gears, installation of sealed bearings. The gearbox on this vehicle is free from vibrations, hums and noise, the service life has been increased to 300 thousand km.

The gear shift system has short throws and clear detent. The car is equipped with reinforced (sports) type drives and CV joints using grenades from a German manufacturer.

The chassis on our car is installed entirely from the VAZ 2170 (PRIORA), which includes Priora front and rear struts, springs of variable stiffness, Priora support bearings, and a completely Priora rear beam. The front stabilizer has been increased in diameter from 1.5 to 2.2 mm.

A brace is installed between the front pillars, increasing torsional rigidity of the body.

As a result of using the Priora chassis, the ground clearance of this car increased by 7 cm compared to the usual 2114 and became equal to the Niva’s ground clearance.

The hubs are equipped with bearings from the Japanese manufacturer TOKIKO, the service life of which is 200 thousand km.

Due to the increase in engine power and maximum speed, the car received enhanced brakes and front ventilated brake discs.

In turn, with an increase in the diameter of the brake discs, 14th radius wheels are installed on the car. Tires have dimensions from 175/60/14 to 185/70/14.

The car's exhaust system received a catalyst manifold, which is installed in the engine compartment, and does not hang down almost half a meter like in conventional VAZ models.

The steering has a rack with a variable gear ratio, which greatly facilitates maneuvering in difficult urban conditions.

The cars are equipped with central locking on all doors, electric glass lifts, a third additional brake light, a rear wiper, a heater motor with increased airflow intensity (imported), mud flaps for all four wheels and dirt-proof plastic lockers, athermal glass, including the windshield (light tinted). blue color according to GOST).

Maximum speed 190 km/h

Fuel consumption is 5 liters per 100 km – highway, 7 liters / 100 km – city.

Fuel grade -95.

Recommend VAZ 2114 or Grant? I mean new cars. Or rather, the 14th 8-valve 1.6 engine and the Granta is also 8-valve, I just don’t have enough money for the 16-valve version! Gradually, domestic automobile brands occupy leading positions in the Russian market, despite the people's love for foreign cars. But the reality is that people are forced to switch to domestic cars due to the fact that they simply cannot afford many foreign cars. Moreover, this happens both in the new and secondary car markets. Therefore, we decided to start with a review of domestic cars, and then continue with foreign cars.

Controllability and safety

The VAZ 2114 holds the road surprisingly well. Even when entering a sharp turn, the car does not leave the trajectory, unlike the same “ten”, and generally behaves more or less adequately.

When driving at high speeds, the behavior of the car is easily predictable; the moderately stiff suspension allows you to absorb any unevenness in the road surface. Considering that Porsche specialists once had a hand in refining the Samara’s chassis, it is not surprising that the hatchback easily overcomes roads on which foreign cars are strictly not recommended to drive.

Of course, the price to pay for excessive rigidity is the car’s noise, but if desired, this disadvantage can be reduced by installing a high-quality “noise.”

Granta's suspension was initially designed to be energy-intensive, since the developers had a good idea of ​​what the car would have to face. The Kalina platform was taken as a basis, which was improved taking into account the other dimensions and weight of the car. It turned out well - the car behaves confidently both on asphalt and on primer, swallowing any defects. It copes with speed bumps in the same way, but when the wheel falls into a large hole, the rebound struts can manifest themselves with a characteristic knock.

There is another significant drawback of the Granta - we are talking about the absence of power steering in the “Standard” configuration - it is difficult to drive the car at low speeds, especially if the driver represents the fair half of humanity. But already in the “Norma” modification, an electric amplifier appears, which completely solves the above problem.

In general, the steering of the Granta is noticeably better compared to the Samara. But if you like to drive at high speeds, don’t forget about four full turns of the steering wheel. This is a lot for active high-speed maneuvering. But the negative camber of the rear wheels of the Grant, on the contrary, will add confidence to you, increasing the stability of the car when cornering. Of course, the service life of the tires is reduced, which is the price to pay for driving safety.

What to look for when buying a used Lada Granta

It is clear that if you are going to buy this used Russian car, then most likely your budget leaves much to be desired. Unfortunately, despite the fact that this is a good car for the money, in most cases this model is not purchased for a good life.

Naturally, when money is limited, then buying a Lada Granta on the secondary market is akin to walking through a minefield. After all, in the event of an unsuccessful purchase, it will be doubly offensive to spend money and receive a problematic car that requires large investments. How can this be avoided? What should you pay attention to?

Firstly, let us remind you that the Lada Granta recently underwent a restyling (update), receiving a fresher appearance. This, naturally, led to the fact that pre-restyling models became slightly cheaper on the secondary market and will become even cheaper as restyled models hit the secondary market.

We advise you to look for a car with a liftback body, since this way there is less risk of running into a taxi car with low mileage. This Granta body is rarely used in taxi fleets.

Body

The biggest headache for any Lada Granta owner is, of course, body corrosion, which does not spare any car. Unfortunately, no matter how hard AvtoVAZ tried, they could not overcome the rapid rusting of cars. For example, samples of cars from 2014-2015, judging by reviews on the Internet, showed signs of rust already in the first year of owning a new car.

Reliability

In terms of reliability, these cars are approximately equal. The cost of spare parts will also not be much higher or lower for either model. But you can buy a grant from a newer year, with less mileage, the wear and tear on such a car will be much less, therefore, it will last longer without breakdowns.

But if it does come to repairs, our craftsmen at service stations and garages will disassemble and reassemble the VAZ 2114 with their eyes closed, and the cost of maintenance will probably be less.

Motor

According to service technicians, when purchasing, you should pay attention to the complex 16-valve engine, which, although improved compared to the old indestructible 8-valve engines, still has a number of problems due to the complexity of the design.

First, be sure to measure compression during inspection. In no case should it be less than 11 bar. Ideally it should be 12 bar. The difference between the cylinders should not be more than 0.5-0.6 bar.

Transmission

Also, when inspecting, pay attention to the transmission, which during a test drive should operate without any extraneous sounds or grinding noises. Place special emphasis on reverse gear, which should engage without a crash.

Check whether the clutch pedal is fully depressed. Be sure to pay attention to the operation of the gearbox synchronizers when moving forward, especially in 2nd gear, which most often wears out on these cars (second gear synchronizer).

Suspension

The suspension of the Lada Granta is quite reliable and durable (what else is needed on Russian roads?). Nevertheless, you shouldn’t expect any outstanding mileage from it, like, for example, on Toyota cars. Also keep in mind that the suspension of the Lada Granta is quite stiff and noisy.

There are also complaints about the front struts, which become noisy even with low mileage.

Electrics

The owners of this car are very fond of “tuning” the car by installing amplifiers, amplifiers, LED bulbs, alarms, etc. Unfortunately, very often they do all this on their own. Sometimes it’s wrong, damaging the car’s single electrical circuit, which already tends to fail.

So it would be a good idea to check the car’s electrical system before purchasing.

Exterior

Although the Lada 2014 is a direct and immediate descendant of the Nine, when viewed from the front, it is quite difficult even for a specialist to find something in common. What is not surprising is that it is the front that has undergone the greatest changes. The main visual difference is the bumper in body color. This combination on the classic “nine” was considered a model of tuning. Of course, the radiator grille, head optics unit, fenders and hood have radically changed their appearance - the latter have become more streamlined.

But the designers decided not to bother with the stern - it remained practically unchanged, even the lights remained the same shape. Among the changes, we can mention the appearance of a spoiler and, again, painting the bumper in body color.

Minuses

With frequent active driving, the gears “die” and the gearshift lever simply stops locking in the selected position. There is also a defect in the gearbox gears, which fall apart.

Bottom line. As we have already said, when choosing a used Lada Granta, pay attention to all the important components of the car. It is advisable that the mileage of the car does not exceed 85 thousand km (honest). Also check the car in the taxi database. And, of course, before giving the buyer money, do a comprehensive diagnostic of the car. Never buy a car based on its appearance unless you want to buy a pig in a poke.

What to look for when buying a used VAZ-2114 Lada Samara

At the end of 2013, a historical event took place in Russia - the last VAZ-2114 (Lada Samara-2) rolled off the AvtoVAZ assembly line. It was replaced by the modern Lada Granta. In general, the family of all-wheel drive cars of the Lada Samara series has been produced on the domestic market for more than 30 years.

Let us recall that the Lada Samara-2 VAZ-2114 replaced the VAZ-2109, which was produced since 1987. VAZ-2114 debuted on the market in 1998.

It is worth noting that with the change of generations, a technical revolution did not occur. In principle, purely technically, the VAZ-2114 is the same VAZ-2109, with the exception of a new steering rack and front brakes, which the 14th received from the VAZ-2110. The car also received a 1.5-liter engine with distributed fuel injection and an upgraded manual transmission. Everything else is the usual external and internal restyling.

Options and prices

Regarding the VAZ 2114, the choice is frankly small - all cars of the Samara family were offered only in two possible equipment options: Standard and Luxury.

The cost of a VAZ 2114 in the minimum configuration started at 297 thousand rubles, Samara Lux cost 300 thousand. Since it is now almost impossible to find unsold copies of the Four, these prices can be safely reduced by one and a half to two times, so that you can forget about being in the same price category in the past - especially since inflation makes a significant contribution to the rise in price of cars, regardless of their category.

Now let’s list the Grants’ configurations, indicating the cost and approximate equipment:

  • Standard, 440 thousand rubles, includes a driver's airbag, 14-inch steel wheels, Isofix type mount, audio preparation, ERA-GLONASS system;
  • Classic, 476 thousand, added electric power steering, front electric windows, tilt steering wheel, BC with an indicator signaling the right moment to change gears, central locking;
  • Comfort, 521 thousand rubles, added car radio, second airbag;
  • heated front seats, electric exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals;
  • Luxe, 560 thousand, added foglights, alloy wheels, full power accessories, climate control, alarm, immobilizer, remote central locking, heated windshield, folding back of the sofa in a 6/4 ratio, height adjustment of the driver's seat.

Motor

Initially, the VAZ-2114 received a 1.5-liter 8-valve engine. In 2007, it was replaced by a 1.6-liter eight-valve engine with a similar design. The advantage of these engines is that if for some reason the timing belt breaks, the engine valves do not meet the pistons. And this is important, since timing belt breakage on this model is not uncommon. Moreover, even with a short mileage after replacing the belt.

The engines are quite reliable and can run up to 350-400 thousand km without problems. By the way, do not be alarmed by the knocking of valves when the engine is running. This sound exists even with absolutely serviceable engines. The culprit is the valve tappets, which sit too high in their seats. Damn, design feature. By the way, this engine requires scheduled valve adjustment every 45 thousand km. However, in practice, most car owners do not do this. Unfortunately, despite the reliability of the motor, due to the nature of the cooling system, engines are prone to overheating.

The Samara is a typical hatchback, while the prevailing body type of the Granta is a sedan. So we are deliberately comparing these two bodies, although Grants also have hatches. The models do not have the same engines, so we took cars with approximately the same engines.

Box

The weakest link of the manual transmission is the domestic clutch kit. Therefore, if you don’t want headaches, buy foreign analogues.

Don't be alarmed by the loud noise of the 5-speed manual transmission. Unfortunately, the manufacturing quality of the gears and synchronizers of the VAZ-2114 gearbox was not very good; they howled even on new cars. As on the Lada Grant, wear of the second gear (synchronizers) occurs most quickly in the gearbox.

Service technicians advise regularly monitoring the oil level in the gearbox and, if there is a shortage of oil, adding even more than the nominal value.

Safety

Safety has become practically the main task of the automotive industry in Russia relatively recently, needless to say that the VAZ 2114 was designed in the USSR, where such a car as the Oka was produced, that is, they practically did not think about safety, read as at all.

These are not only airbags and good seat belts, the very molding of the body of the Lada Granta is designed to contain an impact, watch the crash tests of both cars and see for yourself. Good rear-view mirrors, ABS and acceptable front light - this is again about the grant.

Suspension

The suspension of the VAZ-2114 is the same chassis that you will find in the VAZ-2109. So the more modern VAZ-2114 has a certain reliability of the “nine” suspension. But, unfortunately, at the same time, the 14th model also adopted all the childhood sores of the chassis due to design features.

For example, in the VAZ-2114, as in the VAZ-2109, it is still not uncommon for rubber to peel off from the upper shock absorber mounts. Also, do not expect reliability from the aluminum brace brackets, which will burst very quickly from impacts. Fortunately, the supports are usually replaced with imported analogues, which, fortunately, are abundant on the market. Also, instead of aluminum brackets, you can install steel ones. In principle, these are all common problems with the VAZ-2114 chassis. There are no complaints about the ball ones. They travel 80-100 thousand km without any problems. Yes, of course, the original shock absorbers on a VAZ-2114 can leak quite quickly. But they can be replaced with imported analogues, and you will forget about this problem.

The steering rack usually runs 60 thousand km without any problems. Then the knocking starts. But this is usually solved by tightening the steering rack adjusting nut, and you will forget about the steering until 100 thousand km, where you will have to change the steering rods.

Salon

What a car looks like from the outside does not always bother the average car user; comfort inside is much more important. Here, too, the Lada Granta is clearly ahead. Modern materials, non-creaky plastic, comfortable seats - all this is about the grant. The interior design of the VAZ 2114 itself is as angular as the outer part of the car, huge buttons and circular stove control levers look very depressing and poor these days.

Although the Samara also has some advantages in terms of functionality, for example, it has engine and outside air temperature sensors on the instrument panel, the grant decided to save money on this. The low seating position of the seat itself in the 14 may also appeal to many people.

Electrics

Here, too, the VAZ-2114 took away all the sores from the VAZ-2109. Also, the condition of the car’s electrical system determines how the owner treated the car. If he got into the electrics, connecting various electrical equipment, doing everything unprofessionally, then by buying such a car, you risk getting a whole bunch of electrical problems, headaches and dooming yourself to huge expenses. So when inspecting the car, be sure to diagnose all electrical equipment. And don’t mess with a car that has undergone electrical tuning.

Another thing is the interior, where beauty is also not the main thing, but convenience and comfort take first place.

In this regard, the differences are also significant. But not everything is so bad for the VAZ 2114 - for example, an adjustable steering column with a very convenient location of the steering wheel, which absolutely does not interfere with the view of the instrument panel.

If the designers had thought to diversify the interior with wood-look inserts, it would have looked quite good. It's nice to have electric windows, even if only the front ones - for budget cars and this is a luxury. The standard heater is completely new; this was not the case on any predecessor.

The car began to look a little more stylish after adding door sill trims, but in this case the solution turned out to be a double-edged sword - this is where the paint peels off first. The dashboard of the “four” has become more rigid, thanks to which it was possible to get rid of a significant part of the noise and squeaks in the cabin.

The backrest of the rear bench folds down to form a single cargo area, like a typical station wagon.
