Externally, the 21179 engine is very similar to other 16-valve VAZ engines and the 1.6 engine. But it was possible to achieve a volume of 1.8 liters not thanks to an increase in the diameter of the cylinders, but to an increase in the piston stroke in a standard cylinder. To do this, it was necessary to rework the entire connecting rod and piston group, and also install a new crankshaft.
In addition, 21179 is the first VAZ engine to use variable valve timing.
The 1.8 Vesta engine also differs from previous versions in that it has completely redesigned oil and cooling channels.
Due to the increase in engine volume, it was necessary to install new injectors with higher performance, an enlarged throttle valve, and also increase the volume of oil in the engine. The oil pan now holds 4.4 liters of engine oil, and a more efficient oil pump is located under the crankcase. The intake ports are also larger than before.
Another characteristic feature of the 21179 engine was the abandonment of the classic model of using a mass air flow sensor. Now readings are taken using an absolute pressure sensor and an air temperature sensor.

The car seems too fast for Tarzan. After all, those all-wheel drive Tarzans built on Niva units had a standard 83-horsepower engine (as an option - a 75-horsepower French diesel), and this Kalina moves so easily in traffic that catching up with it becomes an almost impossible task. Finally, we stop at an intersection, and I manage to hand the driver a business card, introduce myself and explain what I actually need.
We roll to the side of the road, and Alexander willingly talks about his car. He started as an engineer in the VAZ Engine Design Department, ended his career at AVTOVAZ as the head of the measuring and testing bureau, and at the beginning of the 2000s he went to work on the Tarzan project . That development, having made a lot of noise, unfortunately, sank into oblivion, but Alexander remained the proud owner of Tarzan-2 in the back of a twelve-wheeler. And when a few years later, actually at the price of scrap metal, he “turned up” a new Tarzan frame, Alexander had no other options for a new personal car except an all-wheel drive built according to proven recipes.
In 2012, a new first-generation Kalina was purchased, almost completely stuffed: the leather interior, air conditioning, music and goodies in the form of parking sensors and a rain sensor were included in the kit, and the only thing missing was a standard navigator, which in Kalina was then built in between the speedometer and a tachometer. A year later, through the efforts of Alexander and his friends, this Kalina turned into something that could be called Tarzan-3 - in fact, when registering this car as a converted one, the Vehicle Type Approval that the “classic” Tarzans had was very helpful.
Why a hatchback and not a station wagon? Perhaps this is the question the owner is asked most often. The answer is simple: the final choice of body was decided by the recently launched Nissan Juke, and the Kalina XXL became a kind of response to the Japanese SUV.
Despite its unusual appearance, “Kalina-Tarzan” looks very harmonious from any angle, not least thanks to the “carbon-look” body kit, which Alexander’s friends, young specialists from Togliatti, made in their free time.
Design
Kalina XXL has an off-road arsenal, created according to Tarzan’s patterns, but improved and adapted to the owner’s requirements. It is partly the successor to the technologies of the Tarzan project (here, to this day, you can order a “Tarzan” frame and, with the help of the company’s specialists, turn your front-wheel drive VAZ into a piece-built SUV), in addition, it has a lot of its own developments on the topic of tuning all-wheel drive cars, so part of the work is on Kalina XXL was held here.
A frame was rolled under the body of a standard Kalina, on which elements of an all-wheel drive transmission were mounted - one front axle from a Lada 4x4 in front, and a second one, exactly the same, but rotated 180 degrees, in the rear. But this is probably where the 100% parallels with Tarzan as we know him end. First of all, because of the power unit. The Kalina XXL does not have a Nivov engine, but the original Kalina engine, only converted from “transverse” to “longitudinal” and slightly modified.
Generally speaking, on Alexander’s previous car, Tarzan-2 in the back of a VAZ-2112, a “front-wheel drive” engine rotated 90 degrees was also “experimentally” installed, so the layout of the engine compartment of the Kalina XXL had something to build on. True, in the case of Kalina, the engine had to be moved forward as much as possible, almost to the point of being “butted” with the radiator fan, in order to place the cooling pipes in the rear part.

In the process of finalizing the car, the engine turned from a 1.6-liter to a 1.8-liter with the help of a kit from Super-Auto, which includes “stickless” pistons, connecting rods and a crankshaft - in 2014 we talked in detail about these 1. 8-liter engines for Lada Priora. The engine modified in this way produces 123 hp. With. and about 165 Nm instead of the “stock” 98 hp. With. and 145 Nm. to the usual Nivov speed transmission through a special steel spacer - the so-called adapter plate.
The transfer case is also not fully traditional Niva. Or rather, not fully “Shniv”, if we mean the additional third support. Here it is electronically controlled, which, by the way, is also not a revelation: similar “transfer cases” were installed on some Tarzans from the Lada-Consul era. However, the owner of the Kalina XXL went further and, in addition to abandoning the traditional Niva transmission control levers in the cabin, implemented the disabling of all-wheel drive.

The developed options helped here too - “Tema+” offers customers on Lada 4×4 and Chevrolet Niva mechanical disconnection of the front axle (“Niva” becomes rear-wheel drive), cutting the transfer case coupling in half. Using this solution, Alexander implemented a rear axle disconnection in his car, allowing the Kalina XXL to be front-wheel drive when needed - and the disconnection is not mechanical, but again electronic. All transfer case control functions are implemented through standard VAZ electric drives... power windows.
When it became clear that the engine would develop about 120 hp. pp., the idea arose to add speed to the car - so the high-range gear ratio in the transfer case, using a purchased set of gears, changed from the standard 1.2 to 1.0. Now in fifth gear, a speed of 120 km/h is reached at 3,000 rpm instead of the previous 3,400 rpm, and a noticeable margin remains in terms of dynamics.
Another feature of the Kalina XXL transfer case is that the “lower gear” here is activated simultaneously with the center differential locking. These functions can be “separated”, but so far the creator of the car does not see any practical sense in this - they say, since he has already driven to a place where a reduced one is needed, then at least blocking will not hurt.
The rear anti-roll bar, based on the Chevrolet Niva principle, is attached on this car only to the gearbox, and is “decoupled” from the suspension - after all, the standard front suspension of the Niva, which, as we remember, is used here as a rear one, is quite short-travel, and I wanted to compensate for this , and the first tests showed that on a flat surface the stiffness of the suspension springs is enough for confident cornering in normal modes.

Unlike the “canonical” Tarzans, the car has a parking brake driven by Lucas – it looks favorably compared to previous versions of “handbrake” due to its resistance to moisture penetration. And some innovations appeared after the start of daily operation of the car, which at the very beginning was, in fact, sea trials of the prototype, which was gradually brought to the required conditions.
In particular, the clutch was changed three times (Luk, VAZ and, finally, Sachs) until an option was found that ensured minimal jerking of the car when starting and shifting. And in addition, the “spare wheel” under the trunk floor was replaced by a toroidal tank - the Italian gas system, which made the Kalina XXL a dual-fuel car (the gas tank remained standard), appeared shortly after one of the first trips, when the fuel system was “cut down” with low-quality fuel. How this happened at a gas station of a famous brand is a different story.
The spare wheel now replaces the repair kit - fortunately, Matador Izzarda tires with dimensions 205/70 R15 have increased resistance to side cuts. Fuel consumption on gasoline is low - with moderate driving, the on-board computer consistently displays the figure 8.6 l/100 km. A 30-liter gas cylinder is enough for 295 km when driving along the highway at a speed of about 120 km/h - which is easy to calculate as approximately 10 l/100 km. These figures are for front-wheel drive: in the summer on dry surfaces, Alexander uses his Kalina XXL as a front-wheel drive car. But in the rain, and even more so with the onset of cold weather, the car becomes all-wheel drive.
Not all work on the car has been completed. In particular, the inclusion of a low range in the transfer case is still capricious, but in the near future, Alexander says, this drawback will be eradicated.

In addition, it is likely that in the future the car will have suspension from the updated Lada 4×4, also known as VAZ-21214M (currently the Kalina XXL still has the same, not modernized suspension), reinforced front wheel hubs (which have now also become serial on Lada 4×4), and there will also be a transition to a more powerful clutch - instead of 200, there will be a 210 mm one... But all this will require serious investments, which the owner has not yet decided on.
Why didn’t Alexander just buy himself a Lada 4x4 or Chevrolet Niva at one time? Firstly, none of the cars had such an engine (as they don’t even now), and secondly, there were no such “packaged” configurations that would include, in particular, a heated front window (now the Niva has one ). This is if we discard the “thirdly”: Alexander made himself such a car simply because he could :).
By this point, the entire project had cost him a very attractive amount, about 650,000–670,000 rubles, along with the price of the original Kalina of 375,000 rubles, but this was only due to the fact that Alexander did most of the work with his own hands. If you order a similar project from a company, then the work alone, without taking into account all the components, will cost about 120,000–150,000 rubles.

In general, do you recognize it? Gas equipment, reinforced clutch, longitudinally mounted engine on an SUV from front-wheel drive, electronic control of the transfer case, plug-in (non-permanent) all-wheel drive... All these things were tried to be used at AVTOVAZ and even announced serial use on various projects related to the modernization of the Lada 4x4 family (and not only). But the promises remained promises, or rather, they became the undivided domain of small firms and enthusiasts like our Alexander.
Test Drive
But today we can try this exclusive in action. In terms of the interior, it is an ordinary Kalina - except that in the niche under the center console a small block for switching the "gasoline/gas" modes is barely noticeable. But a little higher, behind the lid that hid the ashtray in the first generation Kalina, there is something more interesting - the transfer case control unit.
There are three main buttons: one of them is a “request”, which excludes accidental switching, and two more control directly the disabling of the rear axle and the locking/lowering. Alas, we were unable to turn on the low gear, and while storming the next sand dune we pretty much damaged the clutch, but the off-road capability of this Kalina is still phenomenal!

Due to short overhangs and crazy ground clearance, Kalina XXL confidently climbs forest gullies, and city bumps seem completely insignificant to it. And yes, it feels like the good old Niva while driving (the rear disc brakes, by the way, don’t do much good), but here’s an incredible fact: you can’t hear the transmission squeal at all, and the acceleration dynamics are much better!
The resulting design is especially dynamic in the front-wheel drive version (when you turn on all-wheel drive at the start, you still want more pickup), but with increasing speed, the disadvantages of the “Kalinovskaya” pedigree come to the fore - the steering wheel, equipped with a standard electric power steering, becomes empty, and the zero position is unnecessarily “smeared” " But everything can be saved... by connecting the tailgate - on the highway, all-wheel drive gives the car a little more stability.
At the same time, as soon as the steering wheel deviates significantly from the zero position - for example, in a fast turn or when passing a “ring” - there is almost no resemblance to a regular Kalina: the steering wheel is filled with albeit “electric”, but quite readable feedback and willingly returns to “zero” " These nuances show how painstakingly this car was tuned. This is probably why it is almost not perceived as a homemade product - rather, as a pre-production sample. Although this tuning project clearly has room for improvement.

All-wheel drive would significantly increase the price of the car, so the designers limited themselves to installing the Ride Select system, which is capable of “dissolving” the stabilization system and simulating differential locking. Not a replacement, of course, for all-wheel drive, but it’s also much more fun off-road.
The Lada Ride Select regulator allows you to disable the stabilization system, but when accelerating faster than 58 km/h it will turn on automatically.
The difference when driving in snow with the Lada Ride Select system is noticeable. Where on a regular Xray the electronics would begin to “choke” the engine, on the Cross the wheels are allowed to slip, allowing you to find a grip even on all-season tires. Here it is important to give full but even gas and not let go. Although you shouldn’t expect miracles - this system is not a replacement for all-wheel drive, but an imitation of an electronic differential lock, implemented by braking the wheels of the front axle, it is not capable of replacing a mechanical lock.

At the very beginning of the movement, reactions to pressing the gas pedal are nonlinear - the revolutions increase more than the speed. Further is better. But all the same, we are not talking about any sharpness. The variator does everything deliberately slowly. The main problem of CVTs, when the motor reaches the zone of maximum torque and hangs there, and the car picks up speed by changing the gear ratio of the pulleys, has been dealt with here. But in certain modes, the CVT essence manifests itself - the revolutions drop, but the speed increases.
Jatco also doesn’t like situations where the driver first accelerates, then brakes sharply and presses the gas pedal to the floor again. After pressing the gas, there is a painful pause, followed by a pickup. But after a day of driving, you begin to understand the variator and the logic of its operation.
On the highway the situation is twofold. On the one hand, CVT provides fuel economy and quietness in the cabin. At a speed of 110 km/h the engine runs at 2200 rpm. And consumption is around six liters per hundred. At 90 km/h you can drive with a consumption of 5.5 liters. This is amazing. But overtaking is more difficult. But here it’s not only about the variator, but also about engine power. Still 113 liters. With. — this is the required minimum for a crossover on 17-inch wheels.
Design features of the machine

The X-Ray auto transmission has a torque converter (in the photo the red arrow indicates the drive pulley of the variator on the shaft coming out of the depths of the torque converter, and the driven pulley is indicated by a green arrow). A variator and a planetary gear, which is located on the shaft of the variator driven pulley.
The planetary mechanism of this unit provides two modes of forward movement and one mode of backward movement. This design solution, firstly, reduced the size of the pulleys and, secondly, shortened the metal belt, and all this, as already mentioned, ultimately lightened the weight of the transmission.
What engine does the automatic transmission come with on X-Ray?
This is a power unit of a brand such as the HR-16, produced at AvtoVAZ’s own plant, with 1.6 liters of volume and well tested on both Sandero and Renault Logan, as well as on Duster and Captur. This engine has 16 valves, a chain-type timing belt, has an aluminum block and has proven itself quite reliably in mass versions of both Renault and Nissan.
However, as often happens with us, an opportunity arose, and in mid-July 2019 it was announced that the AMT on X-Ray is not a CVT at all.
And to confirm this statement, here is a video:
In any case, the first 2 minutes of this promotional video are devoted precisely to explaining that the CVT on the X-Ray is by no means a classic CVT, but a kind of compilation of a traditional gearbox, or rather a manual transmission, a torque converter and, in fact, a CVT called “automatic transmission”.

And, indeed, there are some fundamental differences from the CVTs used by the Alliance, namely, in X-Ray they install a CVT with a two-stage gearbox. Which, according to the developers, allows the unit to be, firstly, more compact and, secondly, 13 percentage points lighter than that of traditional CVTs of the Jatco family.
This design supposedly improves the car's towing capacity. However, none of the horde of developers, much less the larger gang of experts, will dare say that the variator is not afraid of cold weather, loads, and especially slipping.
Transmission of Lada-Vesta and X-Ray
In terms of checkpoints, everything is much simpler. The cars have almost identical boxes. Only a 5-speed manual transmission and a robot are installed here. “Lada-Vesta” is equipped with two options: a manual transmission, developed by AvtoVAZ employees, and AMT, a French-made robot.
They did not install Russian-made gearboxes in X-Ray. The model is equipped only with French-made gearboxes - JR5 512 and JH3 518. The operation of domestic and foreign gearboxes is not much different from each other. Both options shift gears smoothly, do not create extraneous noise and are quite short-throwing.
Many cars in the same price category are equipped with automatic transmission, which is better according to reviews. “Vesta” or “X-Ray” do not have this. Only mechanics and robot are installed here. The management of the enterprise took such measures in order to reduce the cost of production, since the introduction and subsequent installation of the machine gun in cars would require additional costs. It is worth noting that the robot is sometimes late in changing gears and this causes jerking. But many owners of Lada-Vest and X-Ray are accustomed to this.
Appearance of Lada X Ray 2021
In general, the new 2021 Lada X Ray is simply replete with deep stampings, original elements, and unusual transitions. Just look at the sides of the car. The graceful “dents” on the wings, as well as the clear, swift stroke of the rib crossing the lower part of the doors, catch the eye. The side glazing is a bit disappointing. Due to the high, upward sill line, the visibility of the car is “lame”. Short overhangs, a sloping roof, and a large windshield angle add dynamism to the silhouette. The updated version of the 2021 Lada X Ray hatchback received new enlarged side mirrors equipped with point turn signal indicators. The beginner's feed looks neat, concise, but quite modest.
Unlike the profile, it has fewer stampings. Interesting elements of the car include large lampshades, which are located almost entirely on the wings. The trunk lid is compact, the opening of the cargo compartment is not particularly spacious. The rear bumper of the 2018 Lada X Ray is modest. For the first time, he received a powerful plastic cover. In the new version, the manufacturer decided to increase the number of brake lights. They can be seen on the upper spoiler, along the edges of the bumper and in the middle of the trim. The new dimensions of the high hatchback Lada X Ray of 2018, and this is how the car is positioned, correspond to the B class. The length of the model is 4164 mm, width 1764 mm, and height 1570 mm. Personally, I am absolutely delighted with the ground clearance. Believe it or not, for a hatchback it is 195 mm, and this is a real crossover.
Exterior
An SUV made in accordance with the brand concept, with a powerful plastic body kit around the perimeter, protective linings on the edges of the wheel arches, sills and the bottom of the doors, looks stylish and brutal.

Noble design and dimensions
The front hood of a very complex design looks amazing. This is where the designers really had a blast. No other car has such transitions or original elements. In the photo of the new Lada X-Ray 2021 of 2021, you can carefully examine it.
The rear has been completely redesigned. A large number of chrome elements have disappeared. Completely new lights appeared, the rear bumper decreased in size, but the tailgate, on the contrary, became noticeably larger and more massive.

Lada's real opponents are the Kia Rio and Ford Fiesta. These are the cars I chose as the main competitors of the 2021 Lada X-Ray. I'll start with Rio. The car is quite attractive, with a spacious, comfortable interior and good quality finishes. The main advantage is a reliable braking system, an informative dashboard, and excellent visibility.
The Kia Rio also has its drawbacks. Among them, I can safely include the “crickets” that appear over time in the car interior, and the low front bumper that touches the curbs. The negative point is the stiff suspension and unclear gear shifting.
The Ford Fiesta has an attractive body design, which, it seems to me, is still inferior to the Lada.
The disadvantages of the Ford include poor passive safety, disgusting sound insulation, and the same “crickets in the cabin” that, oddly enough, the Lada does not have. I’ll also note the tightness in the back seat, the stiff suspension, and weak standard optics, which even adjustments don’t help.

Inside the Lada Vesta car, materials and innovations were used that had not been used on a vase before. This made overall operation more pleasant for people; for the first time on a vase, the steering column could be adjusted for reach and installation angle. The steering wheel can be adjusted for reach by 50 mm and angle by 7 degrees. Vesta now has a multifunction steering wheel, which was not previously available on any VAZ model. The steering wheel has a three-spoke badge in the middle, it looks made with high quality and accuracy! The steering wheel has control buttons for the cruise control radio and telephone.
The instrument panel is interestingly implemented; it is grouped into three wells, all of which resembles a sports car. The quality of the panel material is good. The panel has few lamps, but despite this it looks informative. The torpedo is made of dark plastic. The center console is level with the panel, but protrudes forward a little and this is convenient for use; you don’t need to reach out to press a certain button. The console is divided into two parts, but depending on the configuration, it is located on top (in the expensive configuration there is a multimedia system with a 7-inch screen), and a branded radio in the cheaper basic version. On the second part of the panel there is a climate system separated by a row of buttons. The central tunnel is equipped with two cup holders.
The car has good visibility; the arches do not interfere with the view, as on the previous model 2170. Two airbags are built into the front panel (driver plus passenger). Regarding the interior trim, it looks high quality. The door cards, by the way, use new Soft Look plastic, are visually similar to leather. The plastic is embossed and hard to the touch. Despite the cheap materials, the interior looks quite strict and not childish, and if the car is in the Luxury configuration, the interior is equipped with additional chrome inserts. In general, Vesta’s interior looks a class higher than it is: ergonomic seats with good upholstery, all instruments and elements are arranged thoughtfully. When you get into the car, it’s pleasant to be in, you can see the road, and it’s easy to read the information on the speedometer. The seats have a high depth of adjustment, which allows tall people to feel comfortable behind the wheel. In previous models, there was limited space in the back, which was a big minus. There is ample knee room behind the driver; the distance from the rear sofa to the front seats is 226 mm. In general, it feels like the dimensions inside the car have been thought out. The seats are comfortable, the headrest follows the lines of the body and is friendly with the back of the head when standing in a traffic jam. The distance from the floor to the rear sofa is 345 mm, and from the floor to the top of the front seats is in the range from 276 to 310 mm. The distance from the floor to the steering wheel (since it is adjustable) is from 450 - 528 mm.

In the cabin of the X-ray Cross with a CVT you can carry large long items - we didn’t expect such a flat floor. We fold the back of the front seat, and the lining up to 2.7 meters fits perfectly.
There is still not a lot of space in the back, and the trunk, although well organized, cannot boast of a large volume.
The interior has updated multimedia with support for Android Auto and Apple Carplay. So by connecting your phone, you can use maps with traffic jams, and this costs a lot. But the screen is still not very bright and quite slow.

I bought a Lada Xray Cross on Kashirka on credit on May 1st. In the morning of the same day there was an unsuccessful attempt to purchase at Warsaw, where they fundamentally disagreed on the quality of the new car. So I called a couple of other salons, incl. this. Manager Oleg Shek called me back and said that there were no cars in my configuration, but he had already ordered from the central warehouse, he would arrive in 2 hours, just when I got there. The conversation was much longer, because I really didn’t want to wait for the car, but in the end he said that the car alarm would be free, this convinced me, I came there. The car was transported for longer than 2 hours, and in addition to the signaling, there were also unnecessary extras, but they still cost less than the signaling, so the cost was even a little cheaper than in the previous salon. This car was already normal, I didn’t find any problems with it, we spent the rest of the day completing the paperwork. The registration process was very long, especially at the last stage, before the issuance of the title. Washed, inspected, polished and got insurance pretty quickly, the loan lasted longer. I found inaccuracies in the documents once or twice, incl. in the passport data were redone, this also delayed the process. In general, the impression was good, once again special thanks to Oleg. I was the last one to leave in a new car at 8:30 p.m., although the salon is open until 8:00 p.m., people sat and completed all the paperwork for me.
So I decided to share my impressions. Judging by the number of options offered, the hatchback wins. It is available for purchase with 3 different motors. Lada Vesta comes with only one engine option.
Both cars are equipped with a 106 hp engine. With. from AvtoVAZ. This engine was also installed on other Lada models, so many people know about its reliability. It is 4-cylinder, 16-valve and has a distributed fuel injection complex. Of course, the motor is not the most powerful, but it is enough for these models. “Lada-Vesta” with this unit accelerates to 100 km/h in 11.2 s, while “X-Ray” does it 0.2 s longer. In this indicator, the sedan wins. However, it is already losing in maximum speed: Vesta’s is 175 km/h, while X-Ray’s is 176 km/h. You will have to overpay a little for this, since Vesta’s consumption is on average 0.5 liters lower. With such an engine you shouldn’t count on exorbitant power, but it is more than enough for a quiet ride.
“Lada-Vesta” is presented only with this engine. X-Ray also has 2 more engine options. One of them is a 110 hp engine. pp., it is a joint development of the Renault-Nissan alliance. Its device is identical to the previous one. According to the engineers, the engine should have a power of 116 hp. s., however, it was reduced for some reasons. Thanks to innovations, this engine has good traction and is more economical. Top speed has also increased to 181 km/h.
The 122 hp engine is still the most popular. With. and volume 1.8 l. It was developed by AvtoVAZ engineers. At the moment it is installed only in X-Ray. Thanks to a torque of 170 Nm, the engine accelerates the car to 100 km/h in just 10.9 s. The top speed has also increased compared to other variants and is 186 km/h. Fuel consumption has not increased here. This was achieved thanks to the innovations of engineers. The engine could accelerate the car even faster, but due to the fact that the robotic gearbox does not work perfectly, this is impossible. If this engine were installed with mechanics, then realizing the full power of the unit would be much easier.
If a powerful engine is important, then at the moment it is better to give preference to the Lada X-Ray car. Its engine range includes a powerful 122-horsepower engine, which is not available for Vesta. However, the company plans to fix this soon and begin installing the engine in the sedan. In this case, Vesta should become faster than X-Ray. Implementing this engine in a sedan is not the easiest task, so it is being postponed.
Specifications
The basic modification of the crossover is equipped with a 1.6-liter naturally-aspirated gasoline engine producing 106 horsepower, which is combined with a 5-speed manual transmission. For the initial Lada X Ray Cross 2021, technical specifications report 11.7 seconds of acceleration to hundreds, 172 km/h maximum speed and 7.0 liters of average fuel consumption per 100 km. The more powerful (122 hp) power unit has a displacement increased to 1.8 liters and, in addition to a mechanical transmission, can be offered in conjunction with a robotic gearbox with the same number of steps. The passport data of the flagship version reports that in order to see the coveted hundred on the speedometer it will take 10.4 seconds, the acceleration itself ends at around 185 km/h, and the efficiency recorded during certification measurements is 7.2 liters per 100 km. Installing a 5-speed robot only has a detrimental effect on the acceleration dynamics in the technical characteristics of the Lada XRAY Cross 2021, priced from RUB 754,900*. The Russian automaker decided in a unique way to end the controversy over whether the Lada XRAY belongs to the crossover or hatchback segment by putting a big X in the name and at the same time on these disputes.
All-wheel drive Lada Hrey X
They decided to bring the new product as close as possible, both externally and technically, to the SUV class: it is based on the platform of a model with all-wheel drive, and, in fact, the all-wheel drive itself is in the “base”. If the current XRAY was created on the basis of the economical urban hatchback Sandero, then the next generation with the prefix X (it has already been nicknamed X squared) will be created on the platform of a real SUV that has proven its practicality and cross-country ability - Duster. As for the new drive system, at the moment it is “created” by the best engineers of Japan, of course, they are not doing this for the Lada, but it is their all-wheel drive that will form the basis of the XRAY X with some modifications from Nissan.

What else will change in the new domestic crossover, besides all-wheel drive and a platform from a real SUV? According to the developers, the overall dimensions have also undergone changes - the length of the car has been increased by 15 centimeters, and the height has also been increased by five centimeters. On the exterior, manufacturers promise plastic body kits, so beloved by themselves, due to the ease of hiding flaws, and by some fans of the brand. Decorative bumpers will be all over the body, from the sills to the arches. Of course, it will be of average quality painted plastic.

- ESC On – after starting the engine, this mode is activated by default. It is designed to maximally protect the driver from an accident when driving on roads of questionable quality or in bad weather conditions.
- ESC Off – at 54 km/h the ESC system is switched or, more simply put, turned off (Off). Stability and traction control are disabled.
- Sport - the wheels get more freedom from the traction control system. The gas pedal is actually activated by a light touch, and other modes are deactivated.
- Snow/mud - the drive wheels become the centerpiece for additional load. More wheel slip occurs for the braking system to reduce speed more effectively.
- Sand - the drive wheels are maximally freed from various types of electronic restraint (slippage increases). ABS adapts as much as possible to the effective slipping of the drive wheels.

Sport mode is a “standby” mode for driving on paved roads. With it, the throttle response becomes more lively, which helps both when overtaking on the highway and when driving in the city. .

The traction control system gives more freedom to the drive wheels, allowing you to take off energetically. The stability control system reacts less sensitively to vehicle drift. At the same time, the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal is increased. The “Sport” button disables all modes; the selected sport type of driving remains in effect until the driver turns it off or restarts the engine.
