As you know, bad roads can be merciless to vehicles. Regular off-road driving not only kills the chassis, but can also harm the engine. In this case, installing a crankcase protection would be a reasonable solution. You will find below how to do this correctly on a Lada Granta car with a traditional body and a liftback, as well as a video of installation of the crankcase protection.

Lada Granta norma › Logbook › Installing engine protection
I bought protection that fall for 650, but because of the crossbar, such protection cannot be installed regularly. This is the crossbar. And I didn’t really need installation on those ears (which are welded to the protection) - because... I planned to make a subframe on the base of the protection (installation is easier on site, when it is possible to estimate the dimensions of where and where something will fit and then mount it directly on the metal of the protection). Well, sometimes someone’s ears fall off due to vibration because... hold on welding and depends on the quality of welding.
I installed the extension back in the spring of 2021. Here it is ba.d-cd.net/8496942s-960.jpg And immediately I welded two 6mm metal brackets to it, so that later I could attach protection or a subframe there, I thought about tying it in front (the point of all acceleration/braking loads ) and the car body itself (although the place of attachment of these houses itself is flimsy to longitudinal loads, but still).
As a result: I removed the factory boot so as not to interfere. I cut off the rear and front ears of the mount from the protection and made the mount in my own way.
I removed the spacer and marked the attachment points to it. It turned out like this.
Then I installed the spacer in place and screwed the guard onto it to mark the spots for drilling the holes in the front. I took it off and checked it. At the same time I had to cut off the front corners a little more, because... the edge of the protection rested against the crab and did not press tightly against the crossbar.
Next, I cut the standard boot in half so that it could fit into place. It closes the holes more tightly in the front and on the sides, and the plastic elements of the boot are attached to it.
Then I installed protection. At the front, two M8 bolts were screwed into the holes at the standard mounting points on the cross member.
At the back, the shield is pressed more tightly to the stretcher than the boot was because The boot goes around the lever as usual, and the protection is pressed tightly. Then the protection lies horizontally, i.e. There is no reduction in ground clearance. If I had attached it to standard elements, the ground clearance would probably have been a little less.
It turned out like this, the ground clearance was not affected, there is room above the protection for the subframe (I’ll think about that later). Those. I was sawing off the metal, but I didn’t have paint on hand - I covered it with sealant - that’s why there is such a mark) I thought I’d touch it up later, although the crossbar has been over a year and there are no traces of rust on it. I just treated it with a phosphate rust converter and that’s it.
I tried to make a general view of the rear as best I could)
And the idea is in my head to turn the engine mount in the tunnel upside down and attach it to a cross member (additional), it seems to me that this way there will be less vibration from the internal combustion engine at idle. Still, the body is more flimsy. But there is not a lot of choice of standard places for mounting. Here aa.d-cd.net/9b16942s-960.jpg Under the stabilizer link studs, into the boot fastening nut and to the extension bolt, secure the trim on each side. Lay a cross member across the lining and attach the engine support to it. You can also additionally attach the cross member itself to the studs where the engine mount was previously attached. But maybe it's not worth it.
PS: I do everything for myself, I don’t think much about the cost of a car on the secondary market - but for now all my elements (or almost all)))) can be removed without traces that they were there, if suddenly you still need to sell the car someday . Although in 5 years I think it won’t matter what was there, it will already fall in price. And to a greater extent, any tuning is a hobby. Just driving is boring.

Materials
On the automotive market there is a large selection of protective equipment for the Lada Vesta made from a variety of materials. To select the right part, it is advisable to study the properties of the devices. For example, on most models there are hatches through which you can replace the oil filter. To do this, you will not need to remove and then install a body element each time. The price of the issue also matters.
Owners of Lada Vesta use the following materials to protect the crankcase:
Steel
The best option in terms of price/quality ratio are 2 mm steel sheets. This material is used for the manufacture of crankcase protection for the Lada Vesta SV Cross. Installation of a finished part is justified because it withstands impacts well and can keep both the power unit and the gearbox intact. A plus is good rigidity indicators. In the event of an impact, steel can be easily returned to its original shape using simple tools. Service life is approximately 5 years.
Stainless steel
Gives the car a presentable appearance. With high ground clearance, the plate is clearly visible from the front and makes the car stand out from the crowd. The strength of such a shield is beyond doubt. The material is not subject to corrosion, but costs twice as much as a steel device.
Reinforced steel
Reinforced steel protects the heart of the machine well. A shield made of this material has a thickness of 3-4 mm. Typically, this design is installed on jeeps and crossovers. A plus is the ability to recover from a bent plate after an impact. Minus: due to the heavy weight, fuel consumption increases. This is especially noticeable on versions of Vesta with an 8-valve internal combustion engine.
Aluminum
Aluminum is also used for protective purposes. The thickness of the plate is at least 5 mm. The weight is light and the strength is quite high. A positive fact is the absence of sparks upon impact, which eliminates the risk of fire. In terms of strength, duralumin is not inferior to steel. The design of such shields is a flat sheet with several transverse bends and holes for fastening and ventilation. Stiffening ribs are not stamped due to the plasticity of the material.
Titanium
Considered ideal. The material is lighter than aluminum, stronger than steel. However, the high price makes the purchase for the Lada Vesta impractical. It’s another matter if titanium is installed on the Lada Vesta SW Cross to protect the crankcase. High ground clearance allows you to change the appearance of the car. Serial production of these accessories is unprofitable. Therefore, they can only be obtained by placing an order.
Composite materials
Products made from the polymer material Kevlar or fiberglass appeared as a result of a revolution in the production of such accessories. Composite parts are 2.5 times lighter than steel. Particular strength is achieved at the factory by applying several layers of material during the manufacturing process. At the same time, composite products are not subject to oxidation or rust. However, purchasing such a part is complicated by the high price. Accordingly, repairs will also be expensive.

Basic requirements for protection and rules for its installation
The crankcase protection must meet the following requirements:
Video: ProRoad Composite Crankcase Protection
- high strength and rigidity of the structure is ensured by the presence of longitudinal ribs or a special profile and sheet thickness;
- the presence of technological holes to provide access to the crankcase drain plugs during engine maintenance;
- the protective sheet should not interfere with heat transfer and air flow to the engine or impair its natural cooling;
- the fastening elements of the sheet must ensure a strong and reliable connection to the frame that can withstand impacts from hard objects;
- the protection profile should provide an air gap of 2-3 cm from the oil pan, but at the same time should not greatly reduce the vehicle’s ground clearance;
- a protective sheet with a large number of technological holes and ventilation slots has low strength, so their number should be minimal.
To avoid unnecessary problems with installation, it is advisable to purchase original factory crankcase protection. They provide all the holes for fastening, service hatches and other elements that perfectly match the corresponding parts of the underbody of the car. They are also equipped with the necessary fastening elements. You can easily install this cover yourself by following these steps:
- lift the car on a lift or put it on a pit;
- Bolted protection systems vary slightly between different car models. They may have cage nuts, bolts or brackets included in the mounting kit. The protection itself is usually accompanied by installation instructions with a diagram and description. Typically, the protection has 2-3 holes in front for fastening bolts, and in the back there are 2 ears or wide slots for nuts with large washers;
- install the necessary cage nuts, brackets, align the installation holes on the protection and the bottom of the machine, tighten the fastening bolts without applying excessive force.
On some rear-wheel drive vehicles, it may be necessary to install two shields to protect the crankcase and to protect the transmission.
When choosing engine crankcase protection for your car, pay attention to:
- reliability of fastening elements;
- the presence of damper gaskets to prevent the exhaust system from knocking on it;
- the presence of easily removable covers and plugs on technological hatches for changing the oil and filter;
- the presence of a special coating against premature corrosion for steel products.
In any case, installing protection is a reliable guarantee of safe driving on broken roads and off-road.
What can cause crankcase damage?
The main enemy of protection is off-road conditions, potholes, bumps, and driving on rough terrain. If a sheet of iron comes into contact with the ground surface, the protection deforms.
The second problem is the car’s curb weight of 1300 kg. Hitting rocks and bumps at speeds over 60 km/h damages the metal surface of the armor.
The durability of the aluminum engine sump cover is several times lower than that of steel. Hitting a concrete curb at a speed of 45 km/h causes a crack in the oil pan.
Another important factor that must be taken into account when choosing and installing armor is metal fatigue of sheet steel and the negative impact of different environmental temperature conditions.
Poor installation of the “sheet” can also cause damage to the oil pan. Loose fasteners sag, bolts break the aluminum pan cover, and engine oil leaks.

1. | Vladislav: despite numerous complaints about the quality of the factory plate, after purchasing Granta he did not change it. I've been going here for two years now, no complaints. A moderate driving style is the key to safety. |
2. | Konstantin: I agree with the statements that the standard pallet plate is thin, only 2.0 mm. But it is quite enough to preserve the integrity of the crankcase. Of course, driving at speeds over 100 km/h will not help. |
3. | Kirill: a week ago I hit a curb with my right side, I thought I damaged my armor. Everything is intact, no cracks, withstood. |
4. | Alexander: I’ve been driving Grant for three years now, I have no complaints about the metal plate, the quality is good, despite the thickness of only 2.0 mm. |
5. | Victor: A lot has happened in four years of using the car. Scratches, impacts, and dents are visible on the surface of the “armor,” but there are no cracks. |

1. | Ignat: I don’t recommend factory armor, it’s too thin. After purchasing the car, I installed a new one, 3.0 mm thick. |
2. | Vyacheslav: the impact at low speed caused a dent in the metal sheet. What kind of quality are we talking about, only a replacement by another manufacturer. |
3. | Vasily: I don’t see the point in standard armor, it’s not sealed, it’s open on the sides. I installed a custom one, with rubber inserts - anthers, a completely different matter. |

The gearboxes are packed with a large number of gears into very compact housings, a step that requires a high-performance cooling system. The practice of official dealers, who themselves offer the installation of non-original protections, sometimes even several types, also plays against the position of automakers. It is difficult to imagine that in this situation the client would be denied warranty repair of units, the malfunction of which could theoretically be affected by the introduction of such additional equipment. Therefore, if you are afraid of possible problems, but you still need protection, but are running out of money, then buy and install on the side one of its types, which is offered by the dealer. In the event of a warranty claim, no one will look at where it was installed for you. Remember, the mere fact of having non-original protection is not a reason to refuse warranty repairs, for example, due to engine overheating. A cause-and-effect relationship still needs to be established.
On some car models, the standard boot is a solid sheet of plastic with scanty ventilation holes or no ventilation holes at all. In this case, installing metal or composite protection will not change the climate under the hood at all.

How to install crankcase protection
HomeVAZ 2110How to install crankcase protection
Installing a good crankcase protection will protect the units from damage on our roads, but can it also cause harm? Let's try to understand this issue. Should I install crankcase protection or not? And if so, which one is preferable?
Most manufacturers equip their cars only with plastic engine crankcase protection. In fact, it protects only from dirt, and not from mechanical impact. Some auto giants still install some kind of metal protection, but there are also those who do not install anything at all.
Engine crankcase protection
The market offers a wide range of different protection options.
The market offers a wide range of different protection options.
The market for non-original additional equipment comes to the aid of owners who need complete protection of their units. It happens that for one car model there are as many as six different protection options available. The other side of the coin is that this equipment is not certified by the automakers themselves.
At the official level, they say that the installation of such protections can affect the passive safety of the car in collisions and the temperature conditions under the hood. In the first case, human lives are at risk, and in the second, there is a risk of overheating and engine or gearbox failure. In this case, everything will depend on the specific car model, that is, its design features.
For some, additional protection can play a significant negative role, for others - not.
In fact, the automakers are absolutely right, but the whole situation is governed by the word “may.” No one has conducted crash tests of cars with additional protection or any full-fledged studies on their effect on the operation of engines or gearboxes. In practice, there are no statistics that could confirm the negative impact of such additional equipment.
Crash test
Carrying out crash tests is an expensive proposition. The cost of a full-fledged study of changes in the nature of damage with non-original crankcase protection and without it lies in a different plane.

In theory, additional protection certainly affects the distribution and absorption of impact energy throughout the power structure of the car and can lead to the fact that the engine will not be able to go under the car. However, no practical confirmation of this can be found in any body shop. There is also no consistent relationship that additional protection aggravates the consequences of an accident.
Non-standard engine crankcase protection, of course, affects the temperature regime under the hood, or more precisely, the aerodynamic air flows. Theoretically, its installation can worsen the cooling of the engine and gearbox.
After all, its shape and location of the ventilation holes (if any) differ from the factory boot. However, in reality, there is no statistical evidence of possible harm on this issue.
Failures of units due to overheating are mainly associated with their design flaws or malfunctions of the cooling system itself.

Steel crankcase protection is the most popular product that has the most attractive price.
The most budget-friendly are steel options. Unfortunately, they are heavy and provide the least protection. The degree of deformation is the most significant of the trio.
Composite engine protection
The fewer ribs a composite protection has, the higher its strength characteristics - tested on benches. They are only additional voltage concentrators. Therefore, do not chase a beautiful appearance.

In approximately the same price range, which is almost twice the steel level, are aluminum and composite options.
The latter type has the lowest weight with similar strength characteristics to the aluminum version.
Unfortunately, under certain impacts, the composite material cracks and breaks down, and the protection will have to be thrown away. But the aluminum analogue can still be straightened and installed again.
Aluminum crankcase guard
Aluminum crankcase protection costs a lot of money. But it is durable, lightweight and can be restored.

Mounting options for different types of protection may differ significantly. Some can be removed and installed when changing the oil in a couple of minutes, while others will require much more time. All other things being equal, it is better to choose the option that will have the simplest and most reliable fasteners. This is where the experience of other owners will come to the rescue.
Otherwise, you will have to constantly resort to intricate techniques when removing and installing, so as not to break soured fasteners, which can be extremely poorly positioned.
Sometimes there are protections with technological windows under the drain plugs and the oil filter, but more often than not it is easier to dismantle such protection, so as not to have to wipe off the oil that has spread over it for a long time and persistently.
Installation
This process is not labor-intensive; even a beginner in this matter can handle it. In fact, this procedure takes no more than twenty minutes. Therefore, it should not cause any special difficulties, especially since you will see in the video how this is done. But in order to do everything at once, you should prepare in advance.
What will be needed for replacement?
Actually, to replace the element you only need a set of wrenches, no other tools are needed. Also, of course, you will need the structure itself that you will install. For Lada Granta cars, crankcase protection from Kalina is perfect. But keep in mind that it is different for automatic and manual transmissions. Therefore, consider this factor before purchasing.
New protective structure for the Lada Granta engine crankcase
Step by step work
So let's get started with the installation:
- First, you need to drive your vehicle into a pit or overpass so that you have free access to the bottom of the car. Place wheel chocks under the car and set the handbrake.
- The front wheels may interfere with installation. If you are uncomfortable, then lift the front of the car on a jack and remove both wheels. But if you put the front of the Lada Granta on a jack, then before you begin installing the structure, place supports under the car. In this case, ordinary bricks will do.
- Get under the bottom. You may already have standard factory engine protection installed. If this is the case, then take a wrench and unscrew all the screws around the perimeter that secure it and dismantle the structure. Clean the lower part of the motor from dirt and dust, if necessary, treat with an anti-corrosion agent to prevent rust.
- As you can see, it's not that difficult. Now all that remains is to install the new structure. It is attached very easily, it is quite possible to do it yourself. Take the same bolts on which the factory design was installed and screw your purchased crankcase protection onto the bottom of the Lada Granta with their help. On the rear side, which is closer to the interior, the structure can be attached to the lever supports. On the front side it is attached to the so-called crabs.
1. Place the vehicle on supports and remove the protective structure provided by the manufacturer
2. Install the new protection, securing it with bolts. At the rear it is attached to the lever supports, at the front - to the crabs. Actually, this completes the procedure. You can learn more about installation from the video provided below.
And remember that using low-quality material in the future can only harm the car. For example, if you purchase a structure made of plastic, then know that it will not be as reliable as a metal one. Of course, the salesperson in the store will tell you about all the advantages of plastic structures, that they supposedly do not rust, and so on.
If, with a strong impact from the bottom, the metal device bends only a little, then the plastic one can not only crack, but also shatter into pieces. And if this happens, then, unfortunately, there are no guarantees that the plastic piece will not get stuck in some pipe of the cooling system. Therefore, draw conclusions and do not buy the cheapest products. More details about the installation are shown in the video.
Video “Correct installation”
This video, using the Skoda Octavia as an example, shows how to install a tray on your car yourself.
Today there is a lot of talk among car enthusiasts about the need to install additional crankcase protection. On the one hand, it provides reliable protection against impacts and dirt. And on the other? There are a number of experts who consider this protection to be an absolutely unnecessary element for a car. Moreover, there is an opinion that plates made of composite materials or steel are harmful to the vehicle. So what should we believe?
The first thing that scares car enthusiasts away from this product is, of course, the cost. You will have to pay about 100 USD for metal protection, 100-150 USD for composite protection, and about 60 USD for plastic protection. The second important point is the need to drill additional holes (in some cases). If this must be done, then it is better to refuse protection. Drilled elements will corrode much faster.
Main types of car crankcase protection
As already mentioned, there are three types of crankcase protection - composite, metal and plastic. The latter’s task is only to protect against dirt. As for the metal and composite product, it can protect the engine crankcase from impacts. Among car enthusiasts, steel protection is most widespread. But the best option is to use protection made of galvanized metal treated with polymer powder coating. The advantages of such a product include a fairly strict appearance and durability. Many inexperienced car enthusiasts confuse composite and plastic protection. It is not right. Composite protection is even stronger than steel, but in appearance it is similar to a plastic product.
Pros and cons of crankcase protection
Installing a steel crankcase protection is justified only in one case, when the car enthusiast very often has to drive along a broken country road. If such “difficulties” are not encountered on the road, then such an addition can only do harm. So what happens? On the one hand, engine protection is good. But there will also be a lot of troubles.
The main problem with such protective devices is the lack of technological holes that would allow oil changes. Often it is simply unrealistic to do this without removing the protection. Consequently, you will have to additionally fork out a certain amount that the service station workers demand for additional work.
The crankcase protection is not always of high quality, so while driving, resonance may occur, which will inevitably lead to the appearance of various unpleasant sounds. If the protection catches the crankcase, this can even lead to damage to the latter.
If your car had high ground clearance, then you can forget about it. Installing protection significantly reduces this indicator. Consequently, while driving on uneven roads, the engine will, of course, be protected, but the likelihood of getting stuck “on the belly” increases significantly.
And even that's not all. Modern foreign cars are assembled in such a way that during an accident the driver and passengers can count on maximum safety. In some cases, the engine must completely change its location, for example, during a frontal impact. Having the guard in place will prevent the vehicle from deforming properly during a crash, which compromises safety. Some manufacturers try to provide crankcase protection, which acts as an original accessory.
So is it necessary to install crankcase protection or is it not necessary? If your engine needs to install such an addition, then it is better to give preference to composite protection, because at least it does not reduce ground clearance. But it would still be wrong for the body to deform in the event of an accident.

DIY crankcase protection for Lada Granta
Crankcase protection is a very important item when it comes to protecting the main components of your vehicle. It protects the engine and other parts of the machine from damage. The device itself can be either metal or durable plastic. Here are some protection features:
- The crankcase protection serves as a barrier against mechanical damage to the main components located under the bottom of the machine.
- Anti-corrosion function. Rain, snow, as well as powder on icy roads negatively affect the condition of the underbody of the car, causing corrosion. Crankcase protection on the Lada Granta allows you to prevent premature corrosion, protecting important components of the car. It itself is powder coated and treated with an anti-corrosion agent.
- Machine safety. Thanks to the stiffening ribs that the crankcase protection has, it will be impossible for ill-wishers to get close to the main components of the car.
Types of crankcase protection structures
The crankcase guard is mainly made of composite materials or stainless steel. There are also plastic structures, but they are often unreliable and can crack even with a slight impact. Therefore, if you choose a material to protect the crankcase, you should not save, because the safety and reliability of your car depend on the funds invested in it.
Quite often they praise the inexpensive metal, bent steel “Sheriff” crankcase protection. Has a thickness of 2 mm. It has good workmanship. The welds are almost invisible, they are made very carefully. The coating is powder paint, which, in turn, will provide good protection against corrosion. It is very convenient, we note, the presence of all factory holes and fastenings. There is no need to drill or finish anything yourself.
How to install crankcase protection on a Lada Granta with your own hands
The process of installing crankcase protection on a Lada Granta yourself is not very labor-intensive (it can take about 40 minutes). But to avoid any difficulties with installation, you need to be properly prepared.
We will need a set of wrenches: a ratchet wrench, an open-end wrench 19 and a pair of sockets 17 and 19. If you have a crankcase protection from a Lada Kalina, then that will also work. However, keep in mind that protection for automatic and manual transmissions varies. Please check this factor before purchasing.
Let's start the installation process:
- First you need to drive your car onto a pit or repair ramp, otherwise you will not have access to the bottom of the vehicle. Be sure to place wheel chocks under the wheels and apply the handbrake.
- It is likely that the front wheels may be in the way. To do this, you need to dismantle them by lifting them with a jack, but first place a wheel chock under the rear wheels. You can use ordinary bricks or wooden blocks.
- Let's crawl under the car. If you have a standard serial protection installed, remove it with a wrench, unscrewing the bolts around the perimeter. After removal, be sure to wipe off any dirt from the bottom of the engine. If necessary, wipe it with an anti-corrosion agent to protect the motor from rust. While access to other components of the car is open, it is recommended to clean them, since dust and dirt negatively affect the anti-corrosion properties of all parts of the car.
- Half the work is already done. A new crankcase protection needs to be installed. We take the same screws unscrewed from the previous protection, and then use them to fasten them back to the bottom of the Lada Granta. Before installation, it would be a good idea to treat the screws with grease or other lubricant. If you need to dismantle them again, it will be easier to do this, since the protection on the bottom is in aggressive conditions. From the front of the car, the crankcase protection is attached to the so-called crabs. On the other hand - for the lever supports.
It is important to remember that if you use too cheap and low-quality materials for protection, then in due time they will not save the engine from mechanical damage. The engine of a car is the most expensive component in it and requires good maintenance
No matter how positively they speak about plastic crankcase protection for Grants, they always have low strength, thereby being inferior to metal ones. Upon impact, the metal protection will simply bend, and the plastic will burst, or even shatter.
Some car enthusiasts independently strengthen the protection structure with additional stiffeners, welding them on top of serial metal. However, for most cases, 2 mm of metal thickness is sufficient, and you do not need to modify the protection you have already purchased.

Self-installation of crankcase protection on a Lada Granta car
As you know, bad roads can be merciless to vehicles.
Regular off-road driving not only kills the chassis, but can also harm the engine. In this case, installing a crankcase protection would be a reasonable solution. You will find below how to do this correctly on a Lada Granta car with a traditional body and a liftback, as well as a video of installation of the crankcase protection. Engine crankcase protection for the Lada Granta liftback is an important attribute of the vehicle. It is a structure made of metal or plastic and is designed to protect the engine and other components of the car from mechanical damage. Main functions of crankcase protection:
- As you understand, first of all, this is the protection of the main components of the machine, which are located under the bottom. With the structure installed, the likelihood of mechanical damage is reduced significantly.
- Safety.
Additional strength is guaranteed by stiffening ribs. With the protection installed, the owner of a Lada Grant has no need to fear theft, because attackers will be blocked from accessing the main components of the vehicle. - Anti-corrosion properties.
They are provided thanks to a special powder coating, which is typical for most design models. If everything is opened with Movil and treated with an anti-corrosion agent, and such a design is used, you don’t have to worry about the safety of the metal.
If you decide to purchase and install this element on your car, then you need to know something about the material. Such elements can be made of stainless steel or composite materials. Less commonly found on the market are plastic structures. They are absolutely ineffective and in most cases are installed on cars on the assembly line as a gift.
When choosing, you need to focus on the hardness of the material. The tougher it is, the more reliably your engine will be protected. With minimal rigidity, the structure can bend or crack even with a minor impact.
Installation
This process is not labor-intensive; even a beginner in this matter can handle it. In fact, this procedure takes no more than twenty minutes. Therefore, it should not cause any special difficulties, especially since you will see in the video how this is done. But in order to do everything at once, you should prepare in advance.
Read more: What is the optimal engine operating temperature?
And if this happens, then, unfortunately, there are no guarantees that the plastic piece will not get stuck in some pipe of the cooling system.
Therefore, draw conclusions and do not buy the cheapest products. More details about the installation are shown in the video.
From this video you can learn about a more detailed procedure for installing the protective structure of the Lada Granta engine.

Lada Granta MAGMA › Logbook › Sheriff crankcase protection on Granta with automatic transmission
When I was choosing crankcase protection for my swallow, I looked at many options. The best option was a composite plastic protection. But its cost is about 5 tr. didn't inspire me. Among the steel protections, I liked the Sheriff crankcase protection made of 2 mm thick bent steel. This is what she looks like:
I chose it based on the following criteria: 1. Workmanship. The weld seams are almost invisible, they are very neat. 2. There are no burrs or poorly processed edges. 3. Very high quality powder painting. It is really difficult to scratch, and therefore the protection will not rust for a long time. 4. The “Sheriff” crankcase protection design protects the engine compartment well from moisture and dirt thanks to metal ears that act as a boot.
5. Full compliance with factory mounting points. During installation, there was no need to drill or bend anything. 6. Doesn't cling to anything. The automatic transmission housing is located at a sufficient distance.
And the overall impression of Sheriff products, compared to other manufacturers on our market, is very good. The rest are made somewhat handicraft. In general, I settled on this protection. True, one circumstance spoiled the impression a little. After long-term use, I discovered an unpleasant nuance. When it became necessary to change the oil, I discovered that the hole in the protection did not line up with the drain plug. And to change the oil, I had to remove the protection from the car. This applies only to cars with automatic transmission, since the oil slot in our sheriff protection is located precisely under the drain plug of the steel crankcase. And as we know, Grants with automatic transmission with the “Prior” engine 21126 have an aluminum pan.
And the drain plug on it is located much further and to the left, in contrast to the standard pan. Although the protection is initially positioned by the manufacturer as universal for manual transmissions and automatic transmissions.
Well, okay to argue. I quickly and easily solved this problem like this:
So before installing, check out the article HERE. I think it will be useful for you to correct this factory jamb just before you put the protection in place.)
So, it means you chose the protection, bought it, and brought it home. Now we need to install it. Let's figure out how to do it yourself, without visiting a service station. Installation does not take much time
Everything is quite simple, but there are a couple of points worth paying attention to. I'll tell you about them a little later
Our protection is attached at four points, similar to most SAMAR ones. The two mounting points are the suspension arm bolts. And two more, this is one bolt each from the front suspension bracket (crabs).
It is most convenient to carry out the work on a viewing hole or a lift. Well, we are simple people, we have neither one nor the other at hand. So let’s consider the “Spartan” method of installation on the ground... 1. We put stops under the rear wheels and pull out the handbrake so that our grant does not roll away. 2. In order to crawl under the car, we lift its front part and place bricks, cinder blocks, pieces of wood under the wheels, in short, who has what for these purposes. We lower the car onto our supports. We do all this taking into account safety, so that our grant does not fly off these stops.

Do you need engine crankcase protection?
Let's imagine a situation that often happens on the road. The vehicle has been involved in an accident resulting in some or all of the engine oil leaking out. The problem must be solved immediately, because running an internal combustion engine without lubrication is fraught with serious consequences. Experienced car enthusiasts know that the best solution in this case is to call a tow truck.
Some people think it’s too expensive and are trying to solve the problem in a different way. They buy new oil, but this is not enough, because there is a crack in the pan. To eliminate it, an adhesive base that is resistant to temperature changes is suitable. It's time to fix it. The car is driven onto bricks so that you can climb under it. All this is unsafe and may result in an unexpected fall of the car.
Engine crankcase protection for jeeps is justified, because they often find themselves in off-road conditions, which increases the likelihood of the described problem occurring. Car owners are ready to spend 15 thousand rubles on new equipment. Plus every year another couple of thousand for maintenance, just to be sure of the performance of the internal combustion engine. Is it necessary for cars such as sedan and hatchback, the main purpose of which is driving around the city?
In fact, the engine crankcase is located inside the subframe, and is surrounded on the sides by beams made of rigid and durable material. You can see this for yourself by looking under the bottom of your car. When hitting an obstacle, the beam will absorb the main energy, thereby helping to soften the impact.
Impact on the engine pan can occur when trying to jump over an obstacle. For example, when driving off a split curb. Its sharp side will most likely touch the lower part of the internal combustion engine. To avoid this, simply be careful when driving and parking. Therefore, many car owners consider engine crankcase protection not only to be a useless unit, but also to have certain disadvantages.
Firstly, these are additional costs during vehicle maintenance. A sheet of metal prevents the replacement of the oil filter and lubricant by covering the drain plug. The technician will have to spend time removing it, as this process is quite labor-intensive. As a result, the car owner will receive a bill for a couple of thousand more.
Secondly, the protection reduces ground clearance by about 1–1.5 cm.
Another drawback is that it interferes with the ventilation of the space under the hood. The cooling and air conditioning radiators are not properly ventilated. This is especially dangerous in hot weather.
Thirdly, engine sump protection allows dirt to accumulate from the road. Under the leaf you can find old leaves, sand and chemicals that are used to sprinkle the road in winter. This mass negatively affects the operation of metal elements, so it is recommended to remove the protective unit once a year and clean it.
Is it worth buying engine crankcase protection? The decision is yours. But we advise you to be extremely careful when driving around the city. On the road, you can often come across fragmented parts of the suspension of other cars or metal debris. This is most often the case on highways. From external influences they jump above the ground and can get into the radiator, suspension arms or engine crankcase of a passing car. There is no protection for the suspension, but it is quite possible to protect the internal combustion engine.
Of course, the likelihood of such an object getting into your car is small, but anything can happen. The consequences of this will be serious for the equipment and costly for you. The metal sheet can protect not only the engine crankcase, but also the gearbox. Each car owner independently decides on its feasibility, taking into account the costs of installation, further maintenance and comparing them with possible repair costs.
How to install crankcase protection on Lada Kalina 2?
HomeVAZ 2110How to install crankcase protection
Many cars, in particular the Lada Kalina Cross, are already equipped with crankcase protection at the factory, but, much to our chagrin, in most cases it is not strong enough and rather serves as a decorative element.
There are protection options available for almost any model, the price of which depends on the material from which it is made.
As a rule, experienced car enthusiasts immediately after purchasing a car replace the factory protection with a new one.
Car Lada Kalina Cross
The crankcase protection is a fairly simple design whose main purpose is to minimize or completely prevent damage to the crankcase, which is located at the lowest point of the body.
Protection is a necessary part in any car and is produced separately for each vehicle. Negative environmental influences, possible impacts, dirt and dampness are what await your car during any trip.
Engine crankcase protection
Many models have special protective wings, which, in addition to mechanical damage, will help keep the protected units clean.
Good crankcase protection not only does not reduce ground clearance, but also improves aerodynamics.
This unit does not require maintenance; it is enough just to check during a routine inspection to see if dirt has accumulated underneath it and if rust has appeared if the protective sheet is made of metal sheet.
Installation is quite simple and does not require much time; drivers usually cope with it themselves.
This video shows the correct installation of the crankcase guard.
Functions
Main functions of engine crankcase protection Lada Kalina:
- protection against mechanical damage to the lower part of the engine;
- prevents the entry of dirt and moisture;
- prevents access to alarm units, which are usually located below;
- protects wiring, connectors, air conditioning pipes, timing belts from moisture and oxidation;
- improves aerodynamic characteristics, which makes the car more economical.
Probably, after all, the main requirement for engine protection on the Lada Kalina can be called its rigidity. It must withstand and protect the components in the event of a collision with any obstacle or stone. Possible deformation of the sheet should not reach the crankcase.
Also, after installing the sheet, the ground clearance should not decrease, or if this is unavoidable, the decrease should be no more than two centimeters. Otherwise, the protection will very often cling to even the most insignificant obstacles.
The installed sheet should not become an obstacle in the event of a frontal collision and should allow the engine to go down. This is essential for the safety of the driver and front passenger.
A large number of different tech. holes significantly reduces the strength of the engine. But at the same time, they are necessary, for example, so that you can change the oil without dismantling the protective sheet. Ventilation holes must be provided to prevent crankcase overheating.
Technological holes
The sheet can only be attached to elements that have sufficient strength - primarily the beam, engine subframe and spar.
It is important that special damping pads are used to secure the structure. If they are not included in the kit, then you probably need to purchase them separately.
Types of protection
Most often, car underbody protection sheets are made of structural steel. It has a number of advantages when compared with sheets made from other materials.
First of all, it is necessary to note its low price, as well as durability. If for some reason the sheet was deformed, it can be easily straightened by removing it even in normal garage conditions.
The negative point is, of course, a lot of weight.
Plastic protection is the lightest, but among its main disadvantages is that it can break if hit with sufficient force. It is also worth noting that the term plastic can mean various materials:
- fiberglass;
- carbon;
- Kevlar.

Installing a protective sheet on a Lada Kalina is quite simple and any car enthusiast can handle it independently within half an hour. Since you will have to work with the lower part of the car, you will need a hole or overpass.
Tools
To install or replace a sheet on a Lada Kalina, we will need the simplest tools that any car enthusiast has:
- ratchet wrench;
- extension;
- set of heads.

Sequence of unscrewing bolts
- Having reached the bottom of the car, if there is an old factory protection (the so-called boot), then the first thing you need to do is remove it.
- We begin dismantling by unscrewing the front bolts, then the side bolts and then the rear. When removing the protection, think about how to support it or invite a partner, since after unscrewing the last bolt, the sheet may fall on you.
- Now we need to install a new one. To do this, apply a sheet and begin to tighten the bolts.
- Don't tighten them too much right away.
- First bait them, and then walk around in a circle and tighten everything until it stops.
- It is worth noting that some types of protection may require different fastenings and therefore may require other tools.

Often, Lada Kalina owners need to dismantle the engine protection. This is mainly due to incidental repair operations. But not all motorists know how to do this correctly. In this article, we will look at the reasons why it is necessary to dismantle the protection, as well as the process of how to do it correctly.
Reasons for dismantling

There are quite a few reasons why it is necessary to remove the engine protection (also called crankcase protection or engine splash guard). Some Kalina owners don’t even know why and why dismantling is necessary.
So, let's look at the main reasons why engine protection is removed:
- Replacement of the part itself due to its deformation due to hitting an obstacle.
- Replacing or removing the front bumper will require removing the protection.
- Changing the oil in the engine or gearbox.
- Removing the engine or other engine components.
- Repair and restoration work on the front part of the body.
- Replacement of timing elements, starter or other parts that require access from below.
- Other operations that require dismantling the protection.
So, the main reasons have been considered, and you can begin the preparation process.
What you need
To dismantle and install the engine protection, you will need a Phillips screwdriver and a 10mm socket (wrench). When the tools are prepared, you can proceed directly to the process, which will take an average of 10 minutes.
Dismantling the Lada Kalina engine protection takes place in a pit or a lift, so you should worry about the availability of such a place in advance. It is advisable that the machine is cooled down, since one careless movement can lead to a burn.

So, let's proceed directly to the removal process itself.
Raise the car and find the mounting bolts. There should be six of them, as indicated in the photo.
The places where the bolts (screws) are located for securing the standard protection of the Lada Kalina engine are shown.
- First, you need to unscrew the rear fastenings so that the protection sag.
- Because it can be uncomfortable, the operation is best performed with an assistant.
- An assistant holds the guard, and now you can unscrew the front four bolts.
This is how you can easily and simply dismantle standard engine protection in 5-10 minutes.

However, to install it you will need to make additional holes for fastening. But, this is done easily, using a drill and a drill. To cut the thread, you should use a standard 10-point tap. It is bolted to the body side members.

conclusions
Removing the engine protection on the Lada Kalina is quite easy and will only take 10 minutes. To complete the operation, you will need a minimum set of tools, which are found in almost any garage.
The AvtoVAZ company has revised its directions and started producing the new Kalina 2 with crankcase protection. When a car owner purchases a car and looks at this protection in his garage, he sees that it is not protection, but just some kind of boot less than 1 millimeter thick.
Some car dealerships themselves offer to install full-fledged crankcase protection, while others, on the contrary, discourage this. The choice always remains with the car owner.
However, if you decide to replace the standard protection, do not be tempted by the inexpensive price of Chinese analogues: it is better to choose the best option in terms of quality and price in the Autocharm online store, which will last a long time and actually perform its functions. Let's remember all the pros and cons of installing crankcase protection.
– When hitting various obstacles, the engine crankcase protection takes on most of the loads;
– Small protection from dust and dirt of the engine and other units in the engine compartment.
– The ground clearance of a car with crankcase protection is slightly reduced (by 2-3 cm);
– In the event of a frontal collision, the protection may prevent the engine and other elements of the engine compartment from moving correctly;
– When performing maintenance at service stations, they charge an additional fee for removing and installing protection;
